Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)

Marine World Uminonakamichi is a large aquarium located in Uminonakamichi, Higashi-ku, Fukuoka City. It is known for its wide variety of marine life, mainly from the waters off Kyushu, and is particularly popular for its fish from the Genkai Sea and Kuroshio Current, dolphin and sea lion performances, and rotating exhibits in large aquariums. Since its opening, the aquarium has also been focusing on marine education and conservation activities in the local area, and is a facility that conveys the "relationship between marine life and people" not only through exhibits but also through commentary and experience programs. Its location overlooks Hakata Bay, and the views from the outdoor exhibits and shows are also attractive.

Highlights

  • Large aquarium and rotating exhibits: You can observe schools of tuna and migratory fish swimming in a large tank modeled after the Kuroshio Current. The impressive scale is a sight to behold.
  • Dolphin and sea lion show: The show held at the outdoor pool is a popular program that combines the performance with the ocean view. Recommended for families.
  • Touching pool and experience corner: It is a learning opportunity for children, where they can experience touching starfish, sea cucumbers, and other creatures (please check the dates).
  • Local sea creatures corner: There are plenty of exhibits introducing the ecosystems of nearby oceans, such as the Genkai Sea and Hakata Bay. There are also explanations of local fish and fishing culture.
  • Backstage guides and events: There are explanations and feeding explanations by animal care staff, as well as special seasonal exhibits and night-time events.

Access (nearest station, transportation, etc.)

  • Nearest station: The nearest station is JR Uminonakamichi Station (it is within walking distance, but depending on your stamina and luggage, we recommend taking the bus).
  • Using JR: Take the JR line from Hakata Station or Tenjin and get off at Uminonakamichi Station. From the station, you can walk, take the park shuttle, or take a local bus.
  • bus: Direct buses and local buses may operate from Tenjin, Hakata, and Kashii. Please check the timetable in advance for destinations and times.
  • car: Accessible via urban expressways and public roads. There is a paid parking lot on the premises, so it is convenient to come by car. However, it can get crowded on weekends and long holidays, and the parking lot may fill up, so we recommend arriving early.
  • othersDepending on the sightseeing route, it is possible to combine it with a ferry or island hopping plan (for example, in conjunction with access to Nokonoshima Island).

*Transportation methods, travel times, and operation status may vary depending on the season and day of the week. Please check the official website or public transportation information for the latest access information.

Estimated stay (estimated time required)

  • Basic tour: Approximately 1.5 to 2 hours (if you want to go through the exhibits)
  • Including shows and experiences: Approximately 2.5 to 3 hours
  • If you also plan to visit the surrounding Uminonakamichi area (Uminonakamichi Seaside Park): Half a day to a full day

Nearby spots

  • Uminonakamichi Seaside Park: With vast flower fields, playground equipment, cycling courses, beaches, and more, it's perfect for families. Combine it with Marine World for a full day of fun.
  • Nokonoshima Island: A nearby island across Hakata Bay that can be reached by ferry. Its seasonal flowers and views are attractive (ferries depart from Meinohama and other areas).
  • Hakata/Tenjin area: A short walk will take you to the city center, where you can enjoy shopping and gourmet food.

Things to be aware of (crowds, manners, seasonal precautions, etc.)

  • congestion: It gets especially crowded on weekends, holidays, spring break, summer vacation, Golden Week, and the New Year holidays. You may need to reserve seats for shows early.
  • Weather and Outdoor ProgramsOutdoor programs such as dolphin shows may be canceled or changed due to bad weather. In the event of strong winds or rain, plan to focus on the indoor exhibits.
  • Manners: There are some exhibits that you can touch and some that you cannot. Please follow the instructions of the staff and refrain from flash photography and shouting.
  • Child-friendly and barrier-free: Strollers are generally accessible, but there are some stairs and crowded areas, so it's convenient to bring a baby carrier. Wheelchair access is also possible, but it's best to check with the facility in advance.
  • What to wear and what to bring: Please bring a hat and sunscreen as the sun will be strong during the outdoor viewing area and in the summer. In the winter, the wind can be strong along the coast.
  • Check for the latest information: Opening hours, closing days, admission fees, show times, and experience events may change depending on the season and facility circumstances. Please check the official website (https://marine-world.jp/) for the latest information before visiting.
