Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)
The Pola Museum of Art is a private art museum surrounded by the lush nature of Sengokuhara, Hakone, and was established based on the collection of the cosmetics company Pola. The museum's extensive collection includes modern and contemporary Western-style paintings, European paintings including those of the Impressionists, works by important artists such as Picasso, Chagall, and Kandinsky, as well as materials on modern and contemporary Japanese art and crafts. The building was designed with harmony with nature in mind, and its charm lies in the tranquil exhibition space that blends seamlessly into the forest. A major feature is the natural light that is brought into the exhibition rooms, and the ability to view the Hakone scenery from the walking paths.
Highlights
- A collection of paintings centered on Impressionist and Post-Impressionist art: trace the trends of 19th and 20th century art through works by Monet, Renoir, Cezanne, and others.
- Masterpieces of modern and contemporary art: Works by world-famous artists such as Picasso, Chagall, and Kandinsky are often exhibited together.
- An exhibition space that is one with nature: The exhibition room uses glass and wood, and the borrowed scenery of the forest that spreads out through the windows enriches the viewing experience.
- Temporary and special exhibitions: Special exhibitions change regularly, allowing you to enjoy the collection on a different theme from the permanent exhibition.
- Museum cafe/shop, walking trails: There is a cafe where you can relax after viewing the exhibits, and a walking trail where you can experience the nature of Hakone.

Things to be aware of (crowds, manners, seasonal precautions, etc.)
- Crowds: The museum sees a lot of visitors during Golden Week, summer vacation, autumn foliage season, and weekends. It tends to get particularly crowded during popular special exhibitions, so be sure to allow plenty of time or make reservations in advance (ticket sales).
- Photography in the exhibition rooms: As with many art museums, there may be restrictions on photography inside the building. Flash photography and the use of tripods are often prohibited, so please follow the notices posted in the building and the instructions of the staff.
- Clothing and Climate: Hakone is in the mountains, so the weather can change quickly and it can get chilly in the mornings and evenings. The exhibition rooms are kept at a comfortable temperature, but if you plan to walk outside, it's a good idea to bring a jacket.
- Manners: Please view the exhibits quietly, turn your cell phone on silent mode, and keep conversations to a minimum. Please refrain from touching the exhibits and only eat and drink in designated areas.
- Barrier-free access and facilities: Many facilities are available, but it's a good idea to check the official website in advance for details (wheelchair access, nursing rooms, etc.).
- Changing exhibits: The collection rotates between permanent and special exhibitions. If there is a work you absolutely want to see, please check the exhibition information in advance.
Note: The latest opening hours, closing days, admission methods (same-day tickets/reservations), and transportation information are subject to change. We recommend checking the latest information on the Pola Museum of Art's official website and official social media before visiting.
