Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)
Nikka Whisky Yoichi Distillery was founded by Masataka Taketsuru, known as the father of whiskey making, and is located on the coast of Yoichi Town, Hokkaido. Established in 1934 (Showa 9), the distillery is unique in that it has adapted the traditional production methods it learned in Scotland to Japan's climate. Direct coal-fired distillation, a landscape of old wooden buildings, and the cool breezes from the sea and temperature differences create ideal maturation conditions for the ingredients, all of which result in a distinctive malt whiskey with a strong, peaty flavor.
The premises include a tour route of the production facilities, a museum (with exhibits on the founder and the production process), a tasting corner, a directly managed shop and a cafe, making it a facility that can be enjoyed by tourists as well as whiskey enthusiasts.
Highlights
- Distillery building and pot still: This is a rare opportunity to see the coal-fired pot still (distillation kettle) up close. It's a must-see to see how the old equipment remains in the same manufacturing method as it was back then.
- Brewing and fermentation: You can learn about the process of turning malt into alcohol through fermentation tanks and brewing equipment (depending on the tour route).
- Storage facility (aging facility): Observe the aging environment, which is affected by the weather and sea breeze. The view of the rows of barrels makes for great photos (although there are some areas where photography is restricted).
- Nikka Whisky Museum: The history of founder Masataka Taketsuru and Rita Taketsuru, an introduction to distillation techniques, and displays of old posters and tools.
- Tasting and bar corner: You can compare the taste of single malts and blended whiskies produced at Yoichi Distillery through free or paid tastings (age verification required).
- Shop-exclusive items: You can purchase distillery-exclusive bottles and merchandise. Popular items may sell out quickly.
- Landscape and Architecture: The seaside location, historic red brick and wooden buildings, and mountain ranges in the background create a beautiful landscape.

Things to be aware of (crowds, manners, seasonal precautions, etc.)
- Age restrictions for tours and tasting: The legal drinking age in Japan is 20 years old. If you wish to sample, you may be asked to prove your age and present identification.
- The importance of checking in advance: Please check the official website in advance for tour times, whether reservations are required, tasting options, closing days, etc. It can get crowded and full, especially on holidays and during peak tourist seasons.
- Crowds: On weekends, holidays, and during tourist seasons (summer, autumn leaves, etc.), the shop and tasting area will be crowded. We recommend arriving early or visiting on a weekday.
- Photography rules: Some areas of the distillery equipment are off-limits for photography. Please follow the instructions of the notices posted within the facility and the guidance staff.
- Clothing and footwear: As it is by the sea, the wind is strong and there are large temperature differences, so we recommend bringing a jacket. The site has cobblestone streets, steps, and outdoor walkways, so wear comfortable shoes.
- Accessibility: Many of the buildings are historical, and there are some areas with steps and narrow passageways. If you are using a wheelchair or stroller, please check with the facility in advance.
- Manners: The manufacturing facilities are in use at a factory. Please do not enter restricted areas, do not touch exhibits, and be considerate of other visitors and tasting guests.
- Winter road conditions: Hokkaido experiences snow and ice in the winter, so if you are visiting by car, be sure to bring studless tires and allow plenty of time.
Yoichi Distillery is a fascinating spot where history and scenery blend together. Before visiting, please check the official information for the latest tour information and opening hours to ensure a safe and comfortable visit.
