Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)

Trappist Monastery is a Catholic monastery located on the coast on the outskirts of Hakodate City, and is a popular tourist spot with its tranquil atmosphere and ocean views. Established by foreign missionaries between the Meiji and Taisho periods, it has a history as a religious facility, and retains the simple, calm atmosphere characteristic of monastic architecture. The views of the Sea of Japan (Tsugaru Strait) that can be seen from the grounds and surrounding area, the chapel, stone buildings, and lush gardens all attract visitors.

The monastery is also famous for its handmade cookies, jam, butter, and other foods (Trappist products), which are popular as souvenirs. A major feature of the monastery is that it combines the solemn atmosphere of a religious facility with the scenery of a tourist destination.

Highlights

  • Chapel and Monastery Architecture: Simple and calm exterior and interior. The combination of the building and the seascape makes for a great photo.
  • Walking path overlooking the sea: Views of the Tsugaru Strait can be seen from around the site, and the seascape changes with the seasons (the sunrises and sunsets are particularly beautiful).
  • Trappist products (shop): Cookies, butter, jam, etc. made at the monastery. Some products are in limited quantities, so they make great souvenirs.
  • A quiet space for prayer: This is not just a tourist spot, but a place where religious life is actually carried out, so you can spend some time in peace.
  • Photo spot: We recommend a composition that includes the sea seen through the monastery's exterior, as well as the lawn and stone walls.

Access (nearest station, transportation, etc.)

  • Nearest station: JR Hakodate Station (the nearest train station is Hakodate Station)
  • Bus: From Hakodate Station, you can take city buses or tourist buses to the Trappist Monastery area (the number of buses varies depending on the season and schedule). Bus stops are generally located within a few minutes' walk.
  • Taxi: Approximately 20-30 minutes by taxi from Hakodate Station (depending on traffic conditions).
  • Car/Rental Car: Approximately 20-30 minutes by car from central Hakodate. Parking spaces may be available on-site or nearby, but if it is crowded you may be directed to a parking lot further away.
  • Sightseeing plan: It is efficient to combine this tour with visiting the major tourist spots in Hakodate city (Goryokaku, Motomachi, Mt. Hakodate).

Estimated stay (estimated time required)

  • Short tour: 30-45 minutes (mainly exterior and shop)
  • A leisurely stroll: 1 hour to 1 hour 30 minutes (including visiting the buildings, strolling around the gardens and the seaside, and shopping at the shops)
  • If you plan to take photos and explore the surrounding area, you should allow 1.5 to 2 hours.

Nearby spots

  • Goryokaku Park: A representative tourist spot in Hakodate. The view from Goryokaku Tower is also recommended.
  • Motomachi area (Christ Orthodox Church, Western-style buildings): A walking spot dotted with historical buildings.
  • Mount Hakodate (night view): The world-famous night view of Hakodate. Accessible by ropeway.
  • Hakodate Morning Market: A market where you can enjoy fresh seafood and local delicacies.
  • Onuma Quasi-National Park (accessible by car): Enjoy boating and walking in this scenic spot rich in nature.

Things to be aware of (crowds, manners, seasonal precautions, etc.)

  • Manners as a religious facility: The interior is a place of worship and prayer, so please view the site quietly. If there are areas where photography or entry is prohibited, please follow the instructions.
  • Opening hours and closing days: The opening hours of the shop and the monastery may change depending on the season and the monastery's events. We recommend checking the opening hours in advance with official information or tourist guides.
  • Crowds: It can get crowded during tourist seasons (summer vacation, consecutive holidays, autumn foliage season, etc.) and on weekends. If you want a quieter atmosphere, it's best to visit on a weekday or in the morning.
  • Weather and clothing: As it is by the sea, the wind is strong and the temperature feels low. Please take measures to protect yourself from the cold, especially in early spring, autumn, and winter. In winter, access may be difficult due to snow accumulation and freezing.
  • Shopping: Trappist products are often in limited supply, so if there's something you're looking for, it's best to arrive early.
  • Surrounding roads: Surrounding roads and parking lots will be congested during the tourist season, so please allow yourself plenty of time.

This charming spot features a tranquil seaside landscape, historic buildings, and locally-sourced handmade souvenirs. Be sure to include this spot in your plans as a place to spend some relaxing time between sightseeing in Hakodate.
