Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)
Suntory Hall, located in Akasaka, Minato-ku, Tokyo, is one of Japan's leading classical music concert halls. Since its opening in 1986, it has hosted top orchestras, conductors, and performers from Japan and abroad, providing high-quality musical programs. The hall employs a seating arrangement called the "vineyard style" (a style in which tiered seats are arranged around the stage), and a major feature is that the sound reaches easily from every seat thanks to its excellent acoustic design. The acoustic design was handled by experienced specialists such as Nagata Acoustics, and the hall is known for its highly regarded chamber acoustics.
Highlights
- World-class acoustics: With a vineyard-style seating arrangement and expert acoustic design, you can experience a nuanced soundstage and balance.
- Wide-ranging program: We host a diverse range of performances, including regular orchestral concerts, chamber music, recitals, chamber music festivals, and special events.
- Pipe organ and special performances: The hall features a large pipe organ and also hosts performances including solos and choruses, making its wide range of musical expression a major attraction.
- Foyer atmosphere: Light snacks and drinks may be available in the foyer or lobby where you can socialize before and after the performance (depending on the performance).
- Hall tours and pre-show events: Pre-show talks and hall tours are sometimes held before performances, offering opportunities to hear about the acoustics and backstage operations.
