Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)

Sunshine Aquarium is an urban aquarium located within the Sunshine City complex in Ikebukuro, Toshima Ward, Tokyo. Taking advantage of its unique rooftop location, the aquarium features open-air exhibits based on the concept of an "oasis in the sky." Since the opening of Sunshine City, it has been popular with locals and tourists alike for many years, and has undergone major renovations in recent years, with the aim of promoting outdoor exhibits and creating more visually appealing exhibits.

Its appeal lies in the wide variety of attractions it offers, including the open feeling that only a rooftop can offer, the view of the animals against the backdrop of the cityscape, the outdoor penguin exhibit, the soothing jellyfish exhibit, and hands-on programs for children. There are also many photogenic spots, making it suitable for families, couples, and solo travelers.

Highlights

  • Rooftop exhibit/open area: An open area where you can observe animals while enjoying the view of the city. The atmosphere changes depending on the weather.
  • Penguin exhibit: A popular outdoor space where you can see penguins at close range. Also recommended for taking photos.
  • Performances and feeding events for marine animals (sea lions, seals, etc.): Don't miss the shows and feedings that take place at different times.
  • Jellyfish exhibit: The fantastically lit jellyfish corner is popular for its calming atmosphere.
  • Tropical fish and coral exhibits: Introduction to the ecology of colorful tropical fish and coral reefs, with plenty of observation points.
  • Experience programs and events: There are seasonal nighttime hours (Night Aquarium), as well as workshops for children and observation sessions held regularly (please check the official schedule).

Access (nearest station, transportation, etc.)

  • Location (approximate): Higashi-Ikebukuro, Toshima-ku, Tokyo (inside Sunshine City)
  • JR, private railways, and subways: Ikebukuro Station (JR, Seibu, Tobu, Tokyo Metro) - Approximately 8-12 minutes on foot from the East Exit or Higashi-Ikebukuro side.
  • It is conveniently located just a 3-minute walk from Higashi-Ikebukuro Station (Exits 6 and 7) on the Tokyo Metro Yurakucho Line.
  • Bus: There are local buses from around Ikebukuro Station and various parts of Tokyo. Use the bus stop at Sunshine City.
  • By car: Sunshine City has a parking lot, but it tends to get crowded on weekends and holidays, so we recommend using public transportation.

Estimated stay (estimated time required)

  • Regular tour: 1 hour to 1 hour 30 minutes. If you want to take your time and take part in events, it will take around 2 hours.
  • If you are with children or watching multiple events: 2-3 hours. If you take breaks on the rooftop or in the surrounding area, you can enjoy the show at your leisure.

Things to be aware of (crowds, manners, seasonal precautions, etc.)

  • Crowds: On weekends, public holidays, and during long school holidays (spring and summer vacations, etc.), there will be queues to enter and crowds in front of exhibitions. It is relatively quiet on weekdays and immediately after opening.
  • Weather-dependent rooftop exhibits: The outdoor area may be closed in the event of rain or strong winds. Please check the official website for the day's opening hours before your visit.
  • Photography: Generally, photography is permitted, but please be sure to follow the rules as flash photography, the use of tripods, and actions that may scare the animals are often prohibited.
  • Be considerate to the animals: Always follow signs indicating off-limits areas and exhibits that you may touch, and do not feed or interact with the animals without permission.
  • Strollers and luggage: Passages may become congested within the building. You may be asked to fold your stroller before moving around, so please follow the announcements and directions made within the building.
  • Infection prevention measures during crowded times: When crowded, you may be asked to wear a mask and disinfect your hands. Please check the latest facility rules before proceeding.

To ensure a smooth visit, check the official website or social media before your visit to see opening hours, event and closing information, and ticket availability (date and time specific tickets available). Enjoy a wonderful aquarium experience.
