Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)

Sarobetsu Wetland is a vast low-lying marshland in northern Hokkaido, centered around the town of Horonobe. Part of the Rishiri-Rebun-Sarobetsu National Park, this subarctic marshland is characterized by its high-lying marshes formed by years of peat accumulation and the endemic wetland plant communities that grow there. It's a treasure trove of migratory birds and marshland-specific insects and plants, and visitors are particularly captivated by its seasonal scenery, including the cotton grass (cotton grass colonies) and marsh flowers from spring to summer, and the autumn foliage of the grasses. Since the 2000s, the area has been recognized as important by international organizations such as the Ramsar Convention, and tourism and nature observation are conducted while striking a balance between conservation and utilization.

Highlights

  • Boardwalks and observation decks: From the boardwalks and observation decks built within the marsh, you can safely observe the marsh landscape up close. The expansive grasslands and the ocean and hills in the distance are an appealing sight.
  • Cotton grass colonies (best time to see: late May to July): The season when the cotton grass covers the marsh with its white fluff, turning it silvery white, is a popular spot for both photography and observation.
  • Marsh Flowers (June to August): Flowers unique to cold regions, such as Ezo no Hanashinobu, Mitsugashiwa, and Hakusan-douri, bloom one after another.
  • Bird watching: As a stopover point for migratory birds, many types of waterfowl and marsh birds can be observed. Binoculars are a great way to enjoy the area.
  • Sarobetsu Wetland Center (Visitor Center): This center offers exhibits on the origins and ecosystem of the wetland, maps, walking information, toilets, parking, and other facilities. Stopping here first will ensure a smooth stroll.

Access (nearest station, transportation, etc.)

  • Nearest station: JR Soya Main Line "Horonobe Station" (Horonobe Town)
  • Travel from the station: Approximately 20-30 minutes by car from Horonobe Station (depending on the season and the marsh area you're visiting). As there are few bus services, we recommend renting a car, taking a taxi, or joining a sightseeing tour.
  • Access by car: Accessible via prefectural and national highways. Parking lots are available in the surrounding area (near the Sarobetsu Marsh Center, etc.).
  • Traveling from the northern part of Hokkaido: It is easily accessible by car from Wakkanai, Toyotomi, and Nayoro, making it possible to combine sightseeing with other spots in Hokkaido.

Estimated stay (estimated time required)

  • Short visit: Viewing the exhibits at the Sarobetsu Wetland Center and walking around the boardwalk takes about 1-2 hours
  • Careful observation: Bird watching, photography, walking to multiple points requires half a day (3-4 hours)
  • Day trip: 1 day (including travel time) if combined with nearby tourist attractions

Nearby spots

  • Sarobetsu Wetland Center (Visitor Center): A base for exhibits, toilets, and walking information
  • Observation spots and roadside stations in Horonobe: Places with a distant view of the marshland and facilities selling local products
  • Wakkanai (about 1 hour by car): A northern port town where you can visit Cape Soya and Wakkanai Park
  • Toyotomi Onsen (a short drive away): A hot spring resort to soothe your travel fatigue (please check opening hours in advance)
  • Rishiri and Rebun Islands: Remote island sightseeing that can be visited by ferry depending on the season and route (departing from Wakkanai)

Things to be aware of (crowds, manners, seasonal precautions, etc.)

  • Crowds: During the peak viewing periods (cotton grass season, summer tourist season), the number of visitors increases, especially on weekends. If you want a quieter viewing experience, we recommend visiting early in the morning on a weekday.
  • Manners: Wetlands are fragile natural environments. Please strictly observe basic nature observation etiquette, such as staying on boardwalks, not picking plants, and always taking your trash with you.
  • Insect protection: In the summer, there are many mosquitoes and horseflies flying around, so it is best to wear long sleeves, long pants, and bring insect repellent spray.
  • Clothing and cold weather: The sea breeze can be strong, making the temperature feel colder. Please bring warm clothing, especially in early spring and late autumn.
  • Transportation restrictions: Public transportation (buses) are infrequent, so please check your travel plans in advance and consider renting a car or using a taxi.
  • Safety: The weather can change suddenly. Please prepare for any eventuality by bringing rain gear, extra drinks, and a charged mobile phone before setting off.
  • Use of drones, etc.: Flying drones within natural parks may be restricted. Please check the rules in advance and refrain from any activity without permission.

Sarobetsu Wetland is a precious place where you can experience the vast landscape and rich ecosystem typical of Hokkaido up close. When you visit, please be mindful of nature conservation and enjoy the beauty of each season.
