Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)

Momijidani Suspension Bridge is a pedestrian-only suspension bridge that spans the valley of the Nasu Highlands, and is a tourist spot where you can enjoy the natural scenery of the four seasons up close. From the bridge, you can get a panoramic view of the stream flowing through the valley floor and the forest on the opposite bank, and in the fall, the leaves turn a stunning color, as the name "Momiji Valley" suggests. It is connected to walking paths and observation spots, making it ideal for casual hiking and photography. It was built with the aim of revitalizing the region and promoting tourism, and its appeal lies in the scenery that blends in with nature.

Highlights

  • Autumn foliage: Enjoy the beautiful gradation of colors, mainly from maples. The best time to see the leaves is usually from mid-October to early November, but this may vary from year to year.
  • Valley scenery: From the bridge, you can enjoy a dynamic view of the valley and stream directly below. The scenery changes with the seasons (fresh greenery, green leaves, snowy scenery, etc.).
  • Photo spots: The observation points in the middle of the bridge and on the opposite bank are ideal for taking photos. You can take fantastical photos in the morning and evening light, or on foggy or cloudy days.
  • Linked to walking trails: There is a course that allows you to walk around the surrounding walking trails, and you can also enjoy nature observation and bird watching.
  • Nighttime illumination (seasonal): Illumination events are held every year in autumn and other times, allowing you to enjoy a different atmosphere than during the day (please check to see if they are being held).

Access (nearest station, transportation, etc.)

  • Train + Bus/Taxi: The nearest major stations are in the Nasu/Nasushiobara area (e.g. Nasushiobara Station, Kuroiso Station, etc.). From the station, it is common to take a local bus, sightseeing bus, or taxi. Please check the timetable in advance as there may be seasonal changes to bus services and routes.
  • By car: Nasu Highlands is easily accessible by car. Take the Tohoku Expressway to the nearest interchange and head to the local parking lot. The surrounding roads and parking lots may be congested on weekends and during the autumn foliage season.
  • Walking: If there are accommodations or tourist facilities nearby, you can walk there as a way to explore (please be aware of distances and elevation changes).
  • Please note: Transport options, parking, bus schedules and connections from the nearest train station may vary depending on the season and the year. Please check official information and public transport links before visiting.

Estimated stay (estimated time required)

  • Just cross the bridge and take some photos: about 30 minutes
  • Take a stroll along the surrounding promenade and enjoy photography: 1-2 hours
  • If you plan to take your time and visit nearby tourist spots: Half a day to a full day

Nearby spots

  • The entire Nasu Highlands: There are a variety of tourist attractions, including nature walks, hot springs, and ranches.
  • Nasu Animal Kingdom/Minamigaoka Ranch: Facilities where you can interact with animals and have farm experiences.
  • Rindou Lake Family Ranch: A spot where you can enjoy the lake and leisure facilities.

Things to be aware of (crowds, manners, seasonal precautions, etc.)

  • Crowds: It gets especially crowded during the autumn foliage season, holidays, and weekends. We recommend visiting early in the morning or on a weekday. The parking lot can fill up, so we recommend using public transportation and leaving plenty of time.
  • Admission and opening hours: There may be admission fees and opening hours. Please check the official information in advance.
  • Safety and Clothing: The bridge may sway. Please be careful if you have small children or are afraid of heights. It may become slippery on rainy or snowy days, so you will need to wear warm clothing and non-slip shoes. There may be restrictions on access during strong winds.
  • Accessibility: There may be steps or slopes, making it difficult for wheelchairs or strollers to pass through some areas. Please check the facility's accessibility information in advance.
  • Conservation of the natural environment and etiquette: Please be considerate of other visitors and the environment by taking your trash with you, not damaging vegetation, and not shouting.
  • Bringing pets: Depending on the facility, you may be able to enter if your pet is on a leash, but please make sure to follow the rules and observe etiquette (cleaning up droppings, etc.).

(Note) The access methods, event information, opening and closing times, admission fees, etc. listed here are subject to change. For the latest information, please check the official website, Nasu Town tourist information, and transportation information.
