New Chitose Airport can be part of your Hokkaido trip, not just the place where you board a flight. If you have extra time before departure, focus on food, souvenirs, Royce Chocolate World, the onsen, or the airport theater depending on how much time you have.

Things to do at New Chitose Airport: quick answer

With 2 to 3 hours, choose a meal, souvenir shopping, and one short airport attraction. With 3 to 4 hours or more, you can consider the onsen or a movie, but only after checking your flight, baggage, security, and current facility hours.

Time-reducing flight Best tire Skip
Under 90 minutes Quick food, drinks, essential souvenirs Onsen, movie, long restaurant waits
2 to 3 hours Meal, sweets, souvenir shopping, Royce Chocolate World Anything that requires a fixed start time
3 to 4 hours Onsen, airport theater, slower meal, shops Leaving the airport unless you planned it carefully
Half day Use the airport as a Hokkaido food and relaxation stop Rushing without checking terminal and baggage needs

1. Eat Hokkaido food before your flight

The airport has a large restaurant selection, including ramen, seafood, Japanese food, cafes, snacks, and takeout options. If this is your last stop in Hokkaido, use the airport as a practical final meal rather than forcing one more city stop into the day.

For the latest restaurants and hours, check the official New Chitose Airport restaurant list before deciding where to eat.

2. Buy Hokkaido souvenirs

Souvenir shopping is one of the easiest uses of airport time. Packaged sweets, dairy-related items, seafood products, and general Hokkaido gifts are easier to compare in the airport than during a rushed final day in Sapporo.

If you are buying chilled items, confirm how long you need to carry them and whether they fit your flight plan.

3. Visit Royce Chocolate World

Royce Chocolate World is a strong short-stop option because it combines a shop, chocolate-themed displays, factory viewing, and a bakery in the airport. It works especially well if you want a Hokkaido sweets stop without leaving the terminal area.

4. Use New Chitose Airport Onsen

New Chitose Airport Onsen is located on the 4th floor of the Domestic Terminal Building. The official onsen site lists long opening hours, making it useful for travelers with a long wait, an early flight, or a desire to rest before moving on.

Do not plan the onsen too tightly. Allow time for check-in, baggage, changing, payment, walking back to your terminal area, and boarding procedures.

5. Watch a movie at New Chitose Airport Theater

The airport theater is useful only when the screening time fits your flight. It can be a good long-wait option, but it is not a good choice if you have less than three hours or if you still need to handle luggage and security.

Do not rely on older Doraemon Sky Park guides

Older travel guides may mention Doraemon WakuWaku Sky Park, but the official airport page says it closed on July 14, 2025. Do not use it as a current planning anchor.

FAQ

Is New Chitose Airport worth arriving early for?

Yes, if you want food, souvenirs, an onsen, or a relaxed final Hokkaido stop. It is not worth arriving early only to sit at the gate.

Can I spend 3 hours at New Chitose Airport?

Yes. Three hours is enough for a meal, shopping, and one short attraction if you manage check-in and security time carefully.

What should I do with 2 hours at New Chitose Airport?

Choose one meal and one shopping area. Avoid activities with fixed schedules, such as a movie, unless the timing is perfect.

Is New Chitose Airport Onsen good before a flight?

It can be, but only if you have enough time. Treat it as a long-wait option rather than a quick stop.
