Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)

Kurohime Kogen is a highland resort located in Shinano Town, Kamiminochi District, Nagano Prefecture, at the foot of Mount Kurohime (approximately 2,000m above sea level). Formerly used as pasture and dairy farmland, it has been developed as a tourist destination, with flower fields and highland walks in the summer and a ski resort in the winter, making it an area that can be enjoyed throughout the year. The plateau offers excellent views, and on clear days you can see the mountain ranges of Hokushin and the surrounding countryside. Other popular attractions include the highland flower fields (including lavender and cosmos), fairy tale-themed facilities, and soft-serve ice cream made with local dairy products.

Highlights

  • Flower fields (lavender, cosmos, etc.)From summer to early autumn, flowers bloom all over the plateau, creating a vibrant and colorful landscape. The best time to see the lavender is from late June to July, and the cosmos from September to October.
  • Lifts and observation decks: Take the lift up to the high ground and enjoy a stroll around the plateau and the view. It's a popular photo spot.
  • Kurohime Kogen Ski Resort(Winter): There are courses for everyone from beginners to advanced skiers, and a wide variety of snow activities are available.
  • Hiking trails and trailheads: Trails on Mt. Kurohime and the surrounding area are well maintained, allowing visitors to enjoy day hikes and forest bathing (climbing to the summit requires mountain experience and proper equipment).
  • Kurohime Fairy Tale Museum and surrounding cultural facilities: There are exhibits for children and fairy tales, so it is recommended for families.
  • Local gourmet food and dairy products: Highland milk, cheese, soft serve ice cream, and other light snacks are popular and can be enjoyed at the shop and cafe.

Access (nearest station, transportation, etc.)

  • Train + Bus/TaxiThe nearest station is Kurohime Station on the Kita-Shinano Line. From Kurohime Station, you can access the entrance to the plateau by seasonal shuttle bus, local bus, or taxi. Buses may run infrequently, so we recommend checking the timetable.
  • car: Approximately 20-30 minutes from Shinanomachi IC via the Joshinetsu Expressway (towards Joetsu) (depending on road conditions). From Nagano City, it's approximately 40 minutes by car. Parking can get crowded during peak season.
  • Access from Nagano: From Nagano Station, the most common route is to take the local train or rental car, and then go via Kurohime Station or by car.

Estimated stay (estimated time required)

Things to be aware of (crowding, etiquette, seasonal precautions, etc.)

  • congestion: During the peak season for lavender and cosmos, long weekends, and the winter ski season, you may have to wait for parking and lifts. We recommend arriving early or visiting on a weekday.
  • Transportation restrictions: Public transportation (buses) may be infrequent, so please check the timetable or consider using a car.
  • Climate and clothing: The temperature on the plateau is lower than on the plains, and it can get chilly in the mornings and evenings. Be sure to bring a jacket regardless of the season. The sun is strong even in summer, so be sure to bring a hat and sunscreen.
  • Winter precautionsDuring the snowy season, roads will freeze and snow will accumulate, so studless tires and chains are essential. Traffic and parking restrictions may be in place around ski resorts.
  • Nature Conservation and Manners: Please do not pick flowers in the flower fields or enter beyond the ropes. If you are bringing pets, please follow the facility's regulations and be considerate of other visitors.
  • Items to carry: It's a good idea to bring along drinks, snacks, insect repellent, rain gear, and a charger for your phone. Don't forget to bring gear for hiking and sudden changes in weather.

Kurohime Plateau is a place where you can easily enjoy the scenery and activities of the plateau. The scenery changes dramatically depending on the season you visit, so please choose the time and clothing according to your purpose (cherry blossom viewing, mountain climbing, skiing).
