Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)
Fukuroda Falls is a famous waterfall located in Daigo Town, Kuji District, Ibaraki Prefecture, and is one of Japan's three most famous waterfalls (Nachi Falls, Kegon Falls, and Fukuroda Falls). The waterfall is characterized by its four-tiered cascades, which is why it is sometimes called "Yodo Falls" (four-stage waterfall). The powerful volume of water and the scenery of water cascading down the rock face changes with each season, attracting many tourists from both Japan and abroad, especially during the seasons of fresh greenery, autumn foliage, and the frozen waterfall in winter. The cliffs, eroded over the years, blend in harmony with the beauty of the surrounding valley, and observation facilities and walking trails have been developed for viewing, making this famous waterfall an easy and enjoyable experience.
Highlights
- Panoramic view from the observation deck: There is a large observation space that offers a panoramic view of the upper, middle, and lower levels, making it easy to capture photos of the seasonal colors and the dynamism of the water.
- Icefall (winter): During the harsh winter (mainly January and February), the waterfall freezes partially, creating an ice formation known as an "icefall." It is also popular to view it at night when it is lit up.
- Walking trails and observation elevators: There are walking trails that take you down close to the falls and observation elevators that allow you to view the falls from different angles. The power of looking up from below is exceptional.
- Scenery for each season: Enjoy the different atmospheres of the fresh greenery of spring, the spray of water in summer, the autumn leaves, and the snowy scenery in winter.
- Nearby hot springs and souvenirs: After viewing the waterfall, you can stop by the hot springs, eateries selling local specialties, and souvenir shops.
Access (nearest station, transportation, etc.)
- Nearest train station: Fukuroda Station on the JR Suigun Line. The waterfall is within walking distance from the station, but it is a bit of a hill, so it is about a 20-30 minute walk or you can take a taxi.
- Bus: During the tourist season and on weekends, sightseeing buses and local buses operate around Fukuroda. Since the number of buses is limited depending on the departure point (Mito or Koriyama on the Joban Line), it is recommended to check the timetable in advance.
- By car: Accessible via the Joban Expressway or the Kita-Kanto Expressway. From Tokyo, it takes approximately two hours if there is no traffic. There are several paid parking lots (tourist parking lots) around the waterfall.
- Note: Roads in the area can be congested during peak season and on weekends, so it's best to consider using public transport or visiting early in the morning or evening.
Estimated stay (estimated time required)
- Light viewing: 30-45 minutes (just enough time to go to the observation deck and take photos)
- If you want to enjoy it at your own pace: 1.5-2 hours (including walking along the promenade, leisurely exploring the surrounding area, souvenir shops and snacks)
- If you include hot springs and sightseeing in the surrounding area: Half a day to a full day

Things to be aware of (crowds, manners, seasonal precautions, etc.)
- Crowds: The park is particularly crowded during the autumn foliage season (late October to November) and on winter weekends. Parking lots can fill up and traffic jams can occur, so please allow yourself plenty of time.
- Safety and footing: The walking paths and observation areas can be slippery when wet. They may freeze over, especially in winter, so please wear non-slip shoes.
- Clothing: The temperature around the waterfall can feel low due to the spray and wind. We recommend bringing appropriate clothing for the season, including cold weather and waterproof clothing.
- Manners: When viewing the waterfall, please be considerate of other tourists and avoid reserving spots for photos, shouting, or leaving trash behind. In order to protect the environment, some areas are off-limits to visitors due to the nature and plant life.
- Pets: Some areas allow pets, but please observe basic etiquette such as keeping pets on a leash and picking up any waste. For the safety of your pet, please reconsider bringing your pet when it is crowded.
- Opening hours and admission fees: Waterfall viewing facilities (observation decks and elevators) may have their own opening hours and admission fees. Please check the official website or tourist information in advance for the latest information.
Fukuroda Falls is an easily accessible spot where you can clearly enjoy the changing seasons. If you visit with plenty of time to spare, taking into consideration the crowds and weather, you can enjoy the power of nature at your leisure.
