Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)
Kusasenrigahama is a vast grassland area in Aso City, Kumamoto Prefecture, with an attractive view of the outer rim of the Aso Five Peaks and the crater of Nakadake. At an elevation of about 1,200-1,300m, it was once a flat area within a caldera formed by volcanic activity, and was given the name "Senri" (1,000 miles) from the expansive grassland that stretches out as far as the eye can see. Historically, it was used as farmland and pastureland, and even today, it is common to see grazing horses grazing, making the large-scale natural scenery popular with tourists.
Highlights
- A grand panorama overlooking the five peaks of Mount Aso and the crater of Mount Nakadake: The view on a clear day is breathtaking and it is a popular spot for taking photos.
- Vast grasslands and grazing landscapes: Horses and cows are sometimes seen, allowing you to get a real feel for the "Aso" atmosphere (please do not touch or feed the horses when visiting).
- Grassland Walking Path: The flat, easy-to-walk path feels like light trekking, and you can enjoy a stroll. The changing appearance of the grass and flowers with each season is also a highlight.
- Photo Spots/Sunrise and Sunset: The early morning mist and golden evening light are particularly beautiful and popular with photographers.
- Horse riding experience and horse-drawn carriage rides: Horse riding experiences and carriage rides are available depending on the season and schedule (fees apply, so please check in advance).
Access (nearest station, transportation, etc.)
- Nearest station: JR Toyohashi Main Line "Aso Station" or "Miyaji Station." Aso Station is the most common entrance.
- Train + Bus: From JR Aso Station, take a local bus (Aso City Bus, Tourist Bus, etc.) or taxi to Kusasenrigahama. Buses run in limited numbers, so be sure to check the timetable in advance.
- By car: Approximately 1 hour to 1 hour 30 minutes from central Kumamoto via National Route 57 (depending on road and traffic conditions). Approximately 40 minutes to 1 hour from Kumamoto Airport. Parking is available on-site (limited space available, may be full during peak hours).
- Sightseeing bus tours: They are often included in sightseeing tours of Kumamoto City and Aso, making for an efficient visit.
- Please note: As this is a mountainous area, roads may freeze or snow in winter, so chains or winter tires may be required. Also, restrictions and road closures may occur depending on volcanic activity.
Estimated stay (estimated time required)
- Short visit: 30 minutes to 1 hour (park, enjoy the scenery, and take photos only)
- Leisurely strolls and horse riding: 1 to 2 hours (including strolls and horse riding)
- Combining with sightseeing in the surrounding area: Half a day to a full day (visiting Daikanbo, Mt. Aso crater, Aso Shrine, etc.)
Nearby spots
- Nakadake (Mount Aso) Crater: Open to visitors depending on volcanic activity, but restrictions may apply. For the latest information, please check the Japan Meteorological Agency and information on Mount Aso.
- Daikanbo: A typical observation spot overlooking the caldera. You can enjoy the view from a different angle than Kusasenri.
- Aso Shrine: A historic shrine that is easy to visit while strolling around town.
- Aso Volcano Museum (Aso Visitor Center): A facility where you can learn about geology and the workings of volcanoes.
- Uchimaki Onsen, Kurokawa Onsen area, etc.: Relax after a long day of walking and soaking in the hot springs (overnight stays and day trips are available).
- Laputa Road/Komezuka: A nearby tourist attraction. There are many photogenic spots scattered around depending on the season and weather.
Things to be aware of (crowds, manners, seasonal precautions, etc.)
- Check volcano information: Aso Nakadake is an active volcano, and volcanic warnings and traffic restrictions may be issued. Be sure to check official information from the Japan Meteorological Agency and the Aso region before visiting. Depending on the eruption alert level, entry may be prohibited.
- Weather and temperature: As the altitude is high, windy days and sudden weather changes can occur, so please bring warm clothing and rain gear. Even in summer, it can get chilly in the mornings and evenings.
- Crowds: Parking lots and observation points are crowded during tourist seasons (Golden Week, summer vacation, autumn foliage season, etc.). Early mornings and evenings are relatively quiet.
- Etiquette: Do not feed or get too close to the grazing animals. The grassland is close to a nature reserve, so please take your trash with you and avoid trampling on it.
- Facilities/Toilets: There may be toilets and shops around the parking lot, but please check in advance as they may be closed at night or during the off-season.
- Traffic safety: Please be careful when parking or making U-turns as there are narrow mountain roads and tourist vehicles entering and exiting the area. In winter, drive safely to avoid freezing conditions.
