Sasayama Castle (Tamba Sasayama City, Hyogo Prefecture) — Overview (History, Features, and Attractions)

Sasayama Castle is a castle ruin located in the center of Tanba Sasayama City, Hyogo Prefecture, and is a tourist destination that retains a strong Edo period castle town atmosphere. The castle was built after the Battle of Sekigahara to give the Edo Shogunate control over the western provinces and to keep the Kyoto and Osaka areas in check, and the remains of the stone walls, moat, and castle walls remain in good condition. Although the castle tower was not built, the earthworks, stone walls, and enclosures around the main enclosure are impressive, and the entire castle ruins have been developed as a historic park, offering attractive views throughout the seasons (especially the cherry blossoms in spring and the autumn leaves).

In recent years, the main citadel's large study has been restored and renovated, and historical exhibits and local materials are now open to the public, making it popular not only with history buffs but also with families and tourists strolling around. The castle town is home to many old townhouses and merchant houses, as well as shops selling local cuisine and specialties (such as Tamba black beans, chestnuts, and local sake), allowing you to enjoy the history and food culture of Sasayama as a whole.

Highlights
