Kumano Hayatama Taisha Shrine (Shingu City, Wakayama Prefecture)

Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)

Kumano Hayatama Taisha is an ancient shrine located in Shingu City, Wakayama Prefecture, and is one of the Kumano Sanzan (Kumano Hongu Taisha, Kumano Hayatama Taisha, and Kumano Nachi Taisha). It has been revered as the center of Kumano faith since ancient times, and in 2004 was registered as a World Heritage Site as part of the "Sacred Sites and Pilgrimage Routes in the Kii Mountain Range." According to the shrine's legend, it has very ancient origins, and enshrines Kumano Hayatama Okami as its main deity. One of the shrine's attractions is that it still retains a strong influence of the culture unique to Kumano faith, such as its symbolic Yatagarasu (a Japanese crow) and the lucky charms made of Nagi leaves carried by pilgrims.

Highlights

  • Worship hall and main hall: Take your time to admire the traditional shrine architecture. You can worship in a solemn atmosphere.
  • Belief in the Yatagarasu: The Yatagarasu, a three-legged crow that has also become a symbol of soccer, is a beloved symbol of the shrine.
  • The nature and forests of the shrine grounds: The old trees and quiet approach to the shrine give off the atmosphere of a pilgrimage to Kumano.
  • Treasure Hall (Collection): There is a treasure hall that displays sacred implements and ancient documents, which provide clues to the history and festivals (please check the opening status).
  • Nearby historical sites and pilgrimage routes: By walking along the Kumano Kodo trails and Kamikura Shrine, you can experience the breadth of Kumano faith.
