Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)
Tokyo Metropolitan Teien Art Museum is an art museum located in Shirokanedai, Minato Ward, housed in a Western-style building that was originally built in the early Showa period as the residence of Prince Asaka (formerly known as the Asaka Palace). The building is based on an Art Deco design, and its well-preserved interior, with stained glass, lighting, furniture, and plasterwork decorations, conveys the atmosphere of the time, making it a major attraction. The building is also home to a well-maintained Western-style garden, allowing visitors to enjoy the combined beauty of the architecture and garden.
Highlights
- Interior of the Former Asaka Palace: You can see the historical beauty of the architecture up close, including halls and reception rooms that still retain a strong Art Deco design (rooms open to the public change depending on the exhibition).
- Special exhibitions: Special exhibitions are held regularly on a variety of themes, including modern and contemporary art, crafts, and design. The exhibits often include works from domestic and international collections and loaned works.
- Garden: The Western-style garden changes with the seasons, and together with the exterior of the building, it is a popular photo spot. The scenery is especially beautiful during the fresh greenery of spring and the changing leaves of autumn.
- Architectural Details: The original lighting fixtures, stained glass, floor tiles, and other details have been preserved, making this a must-see for architecture and photography enthusiasts.
