Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)

The Sagano Torocco Train (official name: Sagano Scenic Railway/Torocco Train) is a tourist train that connects Saga-Arashiyama in Ukyo Ward, Kyoto City, and Kameoka. Originally using the tracks of the San'in Main Line (old line), it was switched to a new line in 1989 and then revived for tourist use in 1991. Its greatest attraction is the close-up view of the beautiful valley along Hozukyo Gorge (Hozugawa River Valley), allowing you to enjoy the natural scenery of each season from the open windows rather than through the windows.

A distinctive feature of the train is the mix of windowless "open-type" carriages and carriages with large windows, which are particularly popular with visitors as they can directly feel the wind, smells, and flow of the river along the valley.Tourists are drawn to the scenery, which changes with the seasons, from cherry blossoms in spring, fresh greenery in summer, autumn leaves, and the clear air of winter.

Highlights

  • The beauty of the Hozukyo Gorge: A spectacular view from the train window, with the sheer rock faces and flowing Hozu River visible up close.
  • The scenery from the train window changes with the seasons: the cherry blossom trees in spring and the autumn leaves in autumn are especially popular.
  • The atmosphere of the trolley station building and platform: The areas around Sagano (Torokko Saga) and Torokko Kameoka stations are also good photo spots.
  • Combination with Hozugawa River Cruise: On the Kameoka side, it is common to combine this with Hozugawa River Cruise (not rafting, but boat rides).
  • Experience the openness of the carriages: Carriages without windows offer plenty of photo opportunities while you feel the breeze, making them ideal for photography.

Access (nearest station, transportation, etc.)

  • Nearest station: Torokko Saga (Torokko Sagano) Station, Torokko Arashiyama (within walking distance from Saga city center). If you are using JR, the nearest station is JR Saga-Arashiyama Station, and you can reach Torokko Saga in just a few minutes on foot.
  • From Kyoto Station: Take the JR Sagano Line (Sanin Main Line) for about 15-20 minutes, get off at Saga-Arashiyama Station, and walk to Saga Torocco Station.
  • Kameoka side: Torokko Kameoka Station is the final stop. It is recommended to combine access by JR Kameoka Station or bus (it is within walking distance from the station, but it is recommended to check the route and travel time in advance).
  • By car: There are parking lots in the area, but they get crowded during the tourist season, so it is more convenient to use public transportation.
  • Note: The number of trains and times may vary depending on the season. Please check the timetable and operating information on the Sagano Scenic Railway's official website in advance.

Estimated stay (estimated time required)

  • Torokko train ride time: Approximately 25 minutes one way (if riding the entire line).
  • Short-term tour (only around Sagano except for the round-trip trolley): 1-2 hours (does not include round-trip ride).
  • If you combine a one-way trolley ride with a Hozugawa River cruise and sightseeing in Arashiyama, we recommend a half-day (3-4 hours) to full-day (6-8 hours).
  • If you include photography and visiting temples and shrines (Tenryuji Temple, the bamboo forest path, etc.), it's a good idea to take your time and spend half a day to a full day there.

Nearby spots

  • Arashiyama (Bamboo Forest Path, Togetsukyo Bridge, Tenryuji Temple): A tourist center within walking distance of the Saga Torocco.
  • Hozugawa River Cruise (Boat Ride on the Hozu River): A popular course that can be combined with the Kameoka Torocco Ride.
  • Historic temples such as Daikaku-ji Temple, Gion-ji Temple, and Nison-in Temple: Easy to visit on the Sagano walking route.
  • Okochi Sanso Garden, Nonomiya Shrine, souvenir shops, Japanese cafes: there are plenty of spots to stop by in between sightseeing.

Things to be aware of (crowds, manners, seasonal precautions, etc.)

  • Crowds: The park is extremely crowded during the cherry blossom season in spring, Golden Week, and the autumn foliage season. We recommend purchasing tickets early (online or at the counter).
  • Tickets: Seat reservations and ticket availability may be limited. Please check the official website in advance for reservation methods, opening hours, and departure times.
  • Photography/Safety: Taking photos in open carriages is popular, but standing and walking inside the carriage or leaning out of the window can be dangerous. Please follow the instructions of the staff and be careful not to drop your luggage or camera.
  • Weather: As the route runs along the river, there may be cancellations or delays in bad weather. Please bring rain gear and warm clothing appropriate for the season.
  • Luggage/Barrier-free: The interior of the trains and stations are designed to accommodate tourist trains, so there may be steps and narrow passageways. If you are using a wheelchair or have large luggage, please consult with the operating company in advance.
  • Manners: As this is a tourist destination, please be considerate of others when it is crowded, avoid loud conversations, and be considerate of others on the train. In order to protect the surrounding nature and scenery, please be sure to take your trash with you and refrain from smoking anywhere other than designated smoking areas.

Finally, the Sagano Scenic Train is a popular activity in Kyoto that allows you to easily enjoy the scenery of all four seasons. Please check the official operation and ticket information before your visit, and make sure to plan your schedule well in advance.
