Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)
Engetsuto is a small sea island off the coast of Shirahama Town, Nishimuro District, Wakayama Prefecture. A round hole has been created in the center of the island due to marine erosion, and the island was named after the shape it resembles a full moon (engetsu). The spectacle of the sun setting through this tall, gaping hole in the sea is particularly famous, making it a popular scenic spot for photography enthusiasts and tourists.
The island is known for its beautiful natural formations and coastline scenery, and is a popular spot to visit in combination with Shirahama Onsen and Shirarahama Beach. You cannot land on the island itself, but the main attractions are the view from the shore and the silhouette in the evening.
Highlights
- Sunset seen through the circular hole: When the setting sun overlaps with the hole at sunset, you can see a fantastical scene that looks like a circular halo floating in the sky. The best time to take photos is during the golden hour in the evening.
- Contrast of the sea and rocks: The contrast between the blue sea, white waves, and dark rock surface is beautiful, and its appearance changes depending on the season and weather.
- Coastal walks: Walking along the coastline allows you to see the island from a different angle. The atmosphere is particularly pleasant in the quieter hours of the morning and evening.
- Photography Tip: You can enjoy a variety of compositions, such as using a telephoto lens to capture the sun setting into the hole, or using a wide-angle lens to include the foreground and create a more majestic image.
