Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)
Sengan-en (also known as Iso Garden) is a scenic spot consisting of a traditional Japanese garden and the former Shimazu family villa, stretching along Kinko Bay in Kagoshima City. Developed by the Shimazu clan since the Edo period, its greatest feature is the strolling garden with a pond that takes advantage of the panoramic view of Kinko Bay and Sakurajima. The garden is also home to the Shimazu family's residential building and the Shōko Shūseikan, an industrial relic from the Meiji period, making it a popular tourist spot that combines history, culture, and nature. The view with Sakurajima in the background is particularly picturesque in any season, making it a famous photo spot.

Things to be aware of (crowds, manners, seasonal precautions, etc.)
- congestion:The number of visitors increases on weekends, holidays, Golden Week, Obon, and during the autumn foliage and cherry blossom seasons. If you want to avoid the crowds, we recommend visiting on weekdays or early in the morning.
- Volcanic activity and ash fall:There may be days when ash falls due to Sakurajima's eruption. Ash may accumulate on clothes and cars, so it is a good idea to prepare a mask, jacket, glasses, umbrella, and towel. Please check the weather and disaster prevention information in advance to check the eruption situation.
- Manners:The park includes historical buildings and cultural assets. Please avoid touching off-limits areas and exhibits, and take your trash home or to a designated area. There may be restrictions on photography and dress code in teahouses and other areas, so please follow the signs.
- Barrier-free:The garden has stone steps and uneven paths, so not all areas are wheelchair accessible. If you are using a wheelchair or stroller, it is a good idea to check the route and accessible areas in advance.
- Food, Drinks and Pets:Please eat and drink in designated areas on the premises. Pets may be subject to restrictions (please check the park rules).
