Cape Ashizuri (Tosashimizu City, Kochi Prefecture)

TOC

Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)

Cape Ashizuri is located near the southernmost tip of Shikoku, and is known for its magnificent scenery, with cliffs jutting out into the Pacific Ocean and a vast horizon. It has long been considered an important navigational landmark, and a lighthouse and observation deck have been built at the tip of the cape. The warm currents allow subtropical plants to grow naturally, and different flowers bloom with each season, making it an ideal place for nature observation. There are also historical and cultural attractions, such as Kongofukuji Temple, a temple on the Shikoku Pilgrimage route, and historical sites and museums related to fishing village culture and John Manjiro (Nakahama Manjiro).

Highlights

  • Observation deck and view from the tip of the cape: The vast Pacific Ocean stretches out beyond the cliffs. The sunrise and sunset views on clear days are particularly spectacular.
  • Cape Ashizuri Lighthouse: A landmark on the cape. The view from the lighthouse and its surroundings is worth seeing (it may not be possible to enter the lighthouse).
  • Kongofukuji Temple (38th Shikoku Pilgrimage): A temple within walking distance. You can enjoy the historic temple and the view of the cape at the same time.
  • Sea cliffs and strange rock formations: You can enjoy the beauty of nature's formations, with cliffs and strange rock formations formed by erosion.
  • Wild birds and subtropical plantsDepending on the season, you can observe migratory birds and see subtropical plants (such as cycads).
  • Nearby coasts and underwater parks (Tatsukushi, etc.): There are underwater parks and beaches nearby, where you can enjoy the scenery of marine life and coral.
  • Historical sites and museums related to John Manjiro: Tosashimizu City has a museum and related historical sites related to John Manjiro, where you can learn about the history of exchanges at the end of the Edo period.

Access (nearest station, transportation, etc.)

  • Public transportation (trains and buses)
    • The nearest major stations are Nakamura (Shimanto City, formerly Nakamura) and Tosashimizu. From major cities (Kochi City), the most common route is to take the train to Nakamura, and then take a local bus or sightseeing bus to Cape Ashizuri.
    • There are limited bus services, so please check the timetable (official information from tourist information centers or bus companies) in advance.
  • car
    • From Kochi City, it takes approximately 2.5 to 3.5 hours by car via national and prefectural roads (this may vary depending on road and traffic conditions). The roads vary between mountainous areas and along the coast, so please allow extra time in winter or in bad weather.
    • There is a parking lot around the cape, but it can fill up during peak seasons, so we recommend leaving early.
  • Taxis and sightseeing tours: Public transportation is inconvenient, so it is convenient to take a taxi from Nakamura Station or your accommodation or take a day-trip sightseeing bus tour.

*Specific times and operation information may be subject to change, so please be sure to check the latest traffic information before setting off.

  • Safety underfoot: Please wear comfortable shoes (with sturdy soles) as there are many cliffs and slippery rocks. Be careful not to approach areas without fences.
  • Number of public transport services: There are few buses running, so please check the return trip or prepare an alternative means of transportation.
  • Manners for protecting nature and culture: Collecting plants, entering restricted areas, and leaving trash behind are strictly prohibited. Please follow local rules and signs.

  • Mobile Phones and Communications: There are some areas where the signal is weak. It is a good idea to have a paper map and timetable with you in case of an emergency.
