Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)

Nokonoshima is a small island located in Hakata Bay in Nishi Ward, Fukuoka City. While fishing and agriculture were once the main industries on the island, its proximity to central Fukuoka City has made it a popular leisure and day-trip destination. The island's greatest attractions are its seasonal flowers and serene seascapes. Nokonoshima Island Park in particular is known as a famous flower spot, with numerous plants planted, including rapeseed flowers and cherry blossoms in spring, flowers from early summer to autumn, and kochia (red leaves) in autumn, offering a beautiful view of downtown Fukuoka and Hakata Bay in the background. The island's attractions also include the laid-back island lifestyle, restaurants and cafes using local ingredients, and seaside walking paths.

Highlights

  • Nokonoshima Island Park: The main spot where you can see flower fields that change with the seasons. There are many viewpoints that are perfect for taking photos.
  • Coastal walks: A walkway overlooking the calm sea. Enjoy the sea breeze and the view of Fukuoka city.
  • Viewpoint: From the island's elevated position, you can see Hakata Bay and downtown Fukuoka, and the evening and night views are particularly beautiful.
  • Local food and drink, direct salesThere are cafes and snack bars that use ingredients from the island, as well as direct sales outlets that sell vegetables picked that morning.
  • Seasonal Events: Illuminations and events are sometimes held to coincide with the peak flower viewing season (depending on the year).

Access (nearest station, transportation, etc.)

  • Nearest ferry terminal: Meinohama Ferry Terminal (Nishi-ku, Fukuoka City).
  • Ferry: It takes about 10 minutes by regular ferry from Meinohama Ferry Terminal to Nokonoshima. There are many departures during the day, but the intervals and times of departures vary depending on the season and day of the week, so please check the timetable in advance.
  • Public transportation: Meinohama can be accessed by foot or bus from Meinohama Station on the Subway Airport Line or JR Chikuhi Line. There is parking available around Meinohama Ferry Terminal, but it gets crowded on weekends and during the flowering season, so we recommend using public transportation.
  • Bicycles and walking: The island is compact enough to get around on foot, but there are some hilly areas, so you can also rent a bicycle (limited number and seasonal).

Estimated stay (estimated time required)

  • Short tour (Nokonoshima Island Park only): Approximately 2 to 3 hours.
  • If you want to take a leisurely stroll around the island and include meals: half a day (around 4 hours).
  • If you want to relax, take photos, or enjoy the sunset, it is recommended to take a day (5-6 hours).

Things to be aware of (crowds, manners, seasonal precautions, etc.)

  • congestion:The ferry and Island Park can get very crowded during the flower viewing season (spring and autumn) and on weekends and holidays, so we recommend leaving early or visiting on a weekday.
  • Check flight times:The last ferry departure time and intervals may vary depending on the season and weather. Please check the official website or call before departing.
  • What to bring:There are only a limited number of stores on the island, so it's a good idea to bring along drinks, essential medications, and small amounts of cash. Stores can get crowded, especially during peak season.
  • Clothing/insect repellent:On days with strong sea breezes or strong sunlight, bring a jacket, hat, and sunscreen. In the summer, insect repellent is also useful.
  • Garbage and Manners:The island is also a place for living, so please observe local etiquette by taking your trash home with you, disposing of it in designated areas, and staying quiet.
  • Pets:Pet acceptance and rules vary depending on the location. If you are bringing pets, please check in advance and make sure they are on a leash and that they clean up after themselves.
