Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)

Goishi Coast, located in Ofunato City, Iwate Prefecture, is one of the most scenic spots on the Sanriku Coast. Its most distinctive feature is the large and small pebbles (known as go stones) that have been rounded by wave erosion and years of seawater action, which are spread all over the coast, creating a unique landscape that looks as if it were paved with go stones. Combined with the scenery of oddly shaped rocks, cliffs, and coves, it is picturesque throughout the year, making it a great spot for photography, landscape observation, and strolling.

Goishi Coast has also been the site of post-tsunami reconstruction efforts and coastal environmental conservation efforts, making it an interesting place to consider the relationship between people and the sea.

Highlights

  • Rounded, polished "Go stones": A unique sight of large and small round pebbles spread across the coast. Depending on the light, the rows of stones appear shiny black, making for great photos.
  • Promenade and Observation Deck: Enjoy a panoramic view of the rocky shore from the coastal promenade and observation deck. Feel the sound of the waves and wind up close.
  • Strange rock formations and cliffs: There are rock formations caused by sea erosion and small coves scattered throughout the area, making it a geologically interesting place.
  • Morning and evening scenery: The beautiful contrast between the sea and the rocks at sunrise and sunset is popular with photographers.
  • Observing sea creatures: Seaweed and small marine life can be seen in the tide pools, making it a great place to take children for an observation walk (please follow the rules when collecting them).

Access (nearest station, transportation, etc.)

  • Nearest station: Sanriku Railway's Sakari Station is located in the center of Ofunato City, and from there you can generally take a local bus or taxi to get to the site. Buses run in limited numbers, so be sure to check the timetable in advance.
  • Car: Accessible via roads along the Sanriku coast of the Tohoku region. Many areas have parking lots, making it convenient to tour by car (please be aware of road conditions in winter and in bad weather).
  • Bus: There are buses that run from Mori Station and downtown Ofunato towards Goishi Coast, but please check the schedule in advance as there are few buses running.
  • Taxis: Taxis are convenient during times when public transportation is inconvenient. Please consider how long you will be staying and how you will get back when making arrangements.
  • Note: Public transport and road conditions may change due to seasonal changes or reconstruction work. For the latest information, please check the Ofunato City Tourist Information Center or the official transport website.

Estimated stay (estimated time required)

  • Short sightseeing (viewing only): 30 minutes to 1 hour
  • Leisurely stroll and photography: 1-2 hours
  • Sightseeing in the surrounding area (including hot springs and meals): Half a day to one day

Nearby spots

  • Seafood shops and fish markets in the city: There are many restaurants where you can enjoy fresh seafood from Sanriku.
  • Hot spring facilities and accommodation: There are day spas and accommodation facilities near the coast and in the city where you can relax.
  • Other scenic spots along the Sanriku coast: By car, you can access tourist spots in the Rikuzentakata and Kamaishi areas (such as Takata Matsubara and the reconstruction sites of the disaster-stricken areas along the coast).
  • Local museums and visitor centers: There are facilities in the area where you can learn about the nature of Sanriku and the history of earthquakes and tsunamis (please check opening times before visiting).

Things to be aware of (crowds, manners, seasonal precautions, etc.)

  • No collecting: It may be prohibited to take natural objects such as go stones or shells home with you. Please enjoy the scenery and leave nature as it is.
  • Watch your step: The rocks on the coast can be slippery with the tide and there are unstable areas. Wear non-slip shoes and be especially careful if you are traveling with children.
  • High waves and tide levels: Rough weather and high waves can be dangerous. Please prioritize safety by staying away from the coast and following any trail closure notices.
  • Busy times: Parking lots and promenades can get crowded during tourist seasons (summer, holidays, autumn leaves). Early mornings and evenings are generally less crowded.
  • Check facilities and transportation: Public transportation and surrounding facilities may change their operations, so please check the timetables and opening hours in advance.
  • Take your trash home: There may be limited trash cans, so it is good manners to take your trash home with you.

*For detailed bus times, parking locations, and the latest information on surrounding facilities, please check with the Ofunato City Tourism Association, the Sanriku Railway official website, or the local information center.
