Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)
Hakuba Happo-one is the foothills and ridge area of the Northern Alps (Ushiro-Tateyama mountain range) that stretches across Hakuba Village, Kitaazumi District, Nagano Prefecture. In winter, it's known as Happo-one Ski Resort, one of Japan's leading ski and snowboard resorts, and from spring to autumn, it's a popular hiking and trekking spot, offering views of alpine plants and the panoramic views of the Northern Alps. The Happo-one area can be accessed via the Happo Gondola Lift, allowing for a variety of activities, from casual mountain walks to full-scale mountain traverses. The Hakuba area also attracted attention as a venue for the 1998 Nagano Olympics, and has since become a popular area for tourists from both Japan and overseas.

Highlights
Happoike Pond: A popular spot for ridge walking. It is famous for its upside-down views of the Hakuba Sanzan and the Northern Alps, making it a popular photo spot. It can be reached in a relatively short time using the gondola and lift.
- Ridge view: From the top of Happo-one, you can see the majestic mountain ranges of the Hakuba Sanzan, Hakuba mountain range, Mt. Goryu, and Mt. Kashimayari. The view on a clear day is exceptional.
- Alpine plants: From late June to August, the area is filled with alpine plants such as dicentra, anemone, and aleutian. We recommend trekking during the flowering season.
- Mountain scenery and autumn foliage: In autumn (late September to mid-October), the leaves turn red and yellow, attracting many climbers.
– Winter skiing and snowboarding: With steep slopes and vast slopes where you can enjoy powder snow, the area is bustling with winter sports enthusiasts from both Japan and abroad.
- Mountain huts and bench points: There are rest points scattered along the ridge where you can easily enjoy the highland breeze.

Access (nearest station, transportation, etc.)
- Nearest station: Hakuba Station on the JR Oito Line. From Hakuba Station, you can travel to the Happo area by bus or taxi.
– Hakuba Station → Happo: Approximately 10-20 minutes by Hakuba Village local bus (Hakuba Village Bus, Alpico Kotsu, etc.), or approximately 10 minutes by taxi (varies depending on traffic conditions).
To get to the Happo Gondola Station (at the foot of Happoike Pond), take the village bus to Happo Bus Terminal and walk a short distance.
– General transportation from Tokyo:
- Shinkansen + conventional train: Tokyo → (Hokuriku Shinkansen) → Nagano Station, Nagano Station → (JR Oito Line or via express train or bus) → Hakuba Station. The journey takes approximately 3 hours (depending on transfer times).
- Expressway bus: Take a direct express bus from Shinjuku or Tokyo (seasonal direct express bus) to Hakuba (approximately 4 hours, varies depending on the season and route).
- By car: Take the Nagano Expressway (Azumino IC, etc.) and drive on public roads to Hakuba Village (chains or studless tires are required in winter).
- Air: Access from the nearest major airport is most common via Nagano Station or Matsumoto Station. Direct flights from Haneda and Narita are limited, so travel by train or bus is the norm.

Estimated stay (estimated time required)
– Just take the Happo Gondola and enjoy the view: 1-2 hours (including walking)
– Happoike Round Trip Hike (Gondola and lift, from trailhead to Happoike): Approx. 2-4 hours round trip (may vary depending on stamina and weather)
- A day trip that goes further along the ridge towards the Hakuba Sanzan mountains or a traverse: 6-10 hours, possibly staying overnight in a mountain hut (planning required)
– Winter skiing and snowboarding: half a day to a full day (one to several days if you want to fully enjoy skiing)
- Sightseeing stay combined with hot springs: If you stay in Hakuba Village for one to two nights, you will have plenty of time to enjoy sightseeing in the surrounding area and the hot springs.

Nearby spots
– Hakuba Ski Jump Stadium (Hakuba Village): A facility related to the 1998 Nagano Olympics, it is open to visitors and visitors can experience the power of the ski slopes.
– Hakuba Iwatake (Iwatake Mountain Resort): Take a gondola to the top of the mountain and enjoy family-friendly walks, mountain biking, and views.
– Hakuba Daisekkei and Mt. Hakuba area (trailhead area): There are many authentic hiking routes.
- Tsugaike Kogen (a famous neighboring plateau): You can easily enjoy the high altitude scenery and flower fields by ropeway.
– Hakuba Onsen: Day trips to the hot springs or overnight stays at ryokans. Relax after a day of hiking and skiing.
– Other ski resorts in Hakuba Village (Hakuba47, Goryu, etc.): Each slope has its own unique characteristics, so if you stay for multiple days you can visit multiple slopes.

Things to be aware of (crowds, manners, seasonal precautions, etc.)
- Crowds: Happoike Pond and the gondola are extremely crowded on weekends, consecutive holidays, during the peak season for autumn leaves and flowers, and during the busy winter season (New Year's holiday and January to February). Since the parking lot can fill up, we recommend leaving early in the morning.
- Weather changes: The weather in the mountains can change suddenly. Be sure to carry warm clothing, rain gear, snacks, and water, and do not push yourself in bad weather.
- Altitude and physical fitness management: The altitude increases even for a short period of time, so if you are unsure of your physical condition, do not push yourself. Be aware of symptoms of altitude sickness.
- Hiking equipment: There are many well-maintained trails around Happoike Pond, but if you are going to walk along the ridge or traverse the mountain, you will need proper equipment such as hiking boots, a map, a headlamp, and extra warm clothing.
- Winter falls and avalanches: There is a risk of avalanches in the backcountry and in areas with remaining snow in early spring. Avoid entering the mountains without a guide and be sure to have the necessary knowledge and equipment.
- Nature conservation and etiquette: Please be considerate of nature and other climbers by taking your trash with you, not picking plants, staying on the trails, and not shouting.
- Wild animals: There are areas where you may occasionally see signs of bears. Please be careful by wearing a bell and keeping food away from animals at night.
- Operating hours and operation information: Gondola and lift operating times, fares, and seasonal operations change every year, so please check the official website or local information in advance for the latest information.

Simple model plan (reference)
- Light day trip: Hakuba Station → Take the Happo Gondola up, stroll around Happo Pond (photos and lunch) → Take the gondola down → Bath at Hakuba Onsen → Hakuba Station
- Trekking oriented: Early morning from the Happo area to Happo Pond, traverse the surrounding area along the ridge (plan according to your physical strength), stay overnight at a mountain hut or descend to a hot spring

If necessary, we can also provide seasonal recommendations (spring/summer flower spots, autumn foliage season, winter ski slopes), specific timetables and bus schedules, and explanations with maps of beginner-friendly routes.
