Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)
Umihotaru is an offshore parking area and tourist facility located at the midpoint of the Tokyo Bay Aqua-Line. It began operation in 1997 (Heisei 9), when the Tokyo Bay Aqua-Line opened. Its major attractions are its appearance like an island floating alone on the sea, 360-degree ocean views, Tokyo Bay, the cityscapes of Tokyo, Kawasaki, and Chiba, and, on a clear day, even Mount Fuji. Equipped with restaurants, souvenir shops, an observation deck, and more, it is popular not only as a rest stop for drivers but also as a tourist spot.
Highlights
- Observation Deck: The rooftop and observation spaces on each floor offer a panoramic view of Tokyo Bay. The view from dusk to night is particularly beautiful, making it a popular photo spot.
- Food and Drink: There are restaurants and food courts specializing in seafood, where you can enjoy a meal while looking out at the sea. The restaurants change frequently, so it's a good idea to check the latest information before visiting.
- Souvenirs and Shopping: There are many souvenir shops selling local seafood and local sweets. You can do some quick and easy shopping here.
- Outdoor walking area: There are walkways and benches where you can feel the sea breeze and relax. Please bring warm clothes on windy days and during the cold season.
- Night view of factories/cityscape: The highlights are the night view of the Kawasaki/Keihin Industrial Zone and the buildings on the Tokyo side, and the scenery created by the lights reflected on the sea surface.
Access (nearest station, transportation, etc.)
- By car: You can enter directly using the Tokyo Bay Aqua-Line (fees apply). Access is possible from the Kawasaki side (Kanagawa Prefecture) or Kisarazu/Tateyama (Chiba Prefecture). Parking spaces are available within the facility. However, it is recommended to leave early on holidays as it can get crowded.
- Expressway buses and shuttles: Expressway buses may operate between Tokyo Station, Yokohama, Haneda Airport, Kawasaki, Kisarazu, etc. (Operations may vary depending on the flight and time of year, so please check in advance.)
- Access by train: There is no direct train access to the nearest station as it is located in the sea. The nearest stations are Kawasaki Station (JR) and Kisarazu Station (JR), and you can access the area by express bus or car.

Things to be aware of (crowds, manners, seasonal precautions, etc.)
- Crowds: It gets especially crowded on weekends, consecutive holidays, and in the evenings at sunset. The parking lot may fill up, so please allow yourself plenty of time during busy times.
- Tolls: The Aqua-Line is a toll road. Tolls vary depending on the season and discounts, so please check in advance.
- Weather/Wind: Because it is located on the ocean, the wind can be strong and it can be cold. Please take measures to protect yourself from the cold, especially in winter or on windy days. You may not be able to enjoy the view on days with poor visibility (fog, rain, cloudy skies).
- Facility opening hours: Opening hours vary by store. If you plan to visit early in the morning or late at night, please check whether the store you are visiting is open.
- Manners: Please be considerate to other visitors on the observation deck and outdoors. Dispose of trash in the designated areas and smoke in the designated areas.
- Safety: As this is an offshore facility, please avoid stepping over the fence or engaging in any other dangerous activities and follow the signs.
When visiting, be sure to check the official website and the latest traffic information, and plan your visit taking into account the weather and crowds. Umihotaru is a unique spot where you can enjoy the view of the sea and city even in a short space of time.
