Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)

Lake Haruna is a crater lake located within the caldera of Mount Haruna (Haruna Volcano) in Takasaki City, Gunma Prefecture, and is known for its charming scenery nestled quietly in the mountain valley. The lakeside changes appearance with the seasons, offering a pleasant stroll and photography in any season, with fresh greenery in spring, escaping the heat in summer, autumn foliage, and snow-capped scenery in winter. The area around the lake is dotted with scenic spots, including Haruna Shrine, which has long been an object of worship in the region, and the small, conical peak of Haruna Fuji. There is also a wide range of activities to enjoy, including mountain climbing, hiking, boating, fishing, and hot springs.

Highlights

  • Lakeside walks:There is a circular path about 5km long that you can walk around at your own pace and enjoy the scenery. There are also many photo spots.
  • Boating:You can view the surrounding mountains from the lake on a rented boat or swan boat (operates during the season).
  • Haruna Fuji and the Ropeway:The ropeway to the summit of Haruna Fuji and the view from the summit are spectacular (please check the operation status).
  • Haruna Shrine:This historic shrine is located near the lake. The approach and the main hall have a lovely atmosphere, making it a recommended stop on your stroll.
  • Smelt fishing (winter):In winter, when the lake freezes over, ice fishing for smelt is sometimes available. Please be sure to check the safety information before ice fishing.
  • Autumn leaves and snow scenes:The autumn foliage season and the winter snow scenery are especially popular, attracting many photography enthusiasts.

Access (nearest station, transportation, etc.)

  • Nearest major station:JR Takasaki Station is the main entrance to the area. From Takasaki Station, you can take a local bus (times vary depending on the season and route), rental car, or taxi. There are also routes from Shibukawa Station and the Ikaho area.
  • bus:Route buses (such as Kan'etsu Kotsu) may operate from Takasaki Station or Shibukawa Station to Lake Haruna. Timetables and operating days change depending on the season, so please check before setting off.
  • car:It takes about 30 to 60 minutes (depending on traffic conditions) via national and prefectural roads from Takasaki IC or Shibukawa-Ikaho IC on the Kan-etsu Expressway. There is a parking lot on the lakeside, but it can get crowded on weekends and during peak tourist seasons, so it is recommended to arrive early.
  • Taxis and rental cars:Taxis and rental cars are convenient during times when public transportation is scarce. In winter, be sure to bring chains to protect against frozen roads and snow.

Estimated stay (estimated time required)

  • Short walk: 1-1.5 hours (light stroll along the lake and photography)
  • Half-day course including boat ride and shrine visit: 3-4 hours
  • Hiking and sightseeing in the area (including climbing Haruna Fuji and hot springs): Half-day to full-day day trips, or an overnight stay at a hot spring inn.

Nearby spots

Things to be aware of (crowds, manners, seasonal precautions, etc.)

  • congestion:Parking lots and surrounding roads can be particularly congested during the autumn foliage season, weekends, and holidays, so we recommend leaving early in the morning or visiting on a weekday.
  • Weather and road conditions:As this is a mountainous area, the weather can change easily, and roads can freeze and snow accumulate in winter. Please be sure to bring chains and winter tires and check the latest road information.
  • Safety measures:Please wear a life jacket when boating, and follow local safety information when fishing or engaging in winter ice activities. Swimming may be prohibited or restricted.
  • Nature and Manners:Please be mindful of protecting the environment by taking your trash with you, not disturbing flora and fauna, and avoiding the use of fires in areas other than designated areas.
  • Drones and Filming:Flying drones may be subject to regulations and may require permission. Please remember to be considerate of other tourists and observe proper photography etiquette.
  • Verify the information:Facility opening hours, ropeway and boat operations, events, and winter business hours may change from year to year, so please check the official website or local government/tourist information in advance for the latest information.
