Kinomiya Shrine is an ancient shrine located in Atami City, Shizuoka Prefecture, known for its sacred camphor tree, which is said to be over 2,000 years old. It has long attracted local worshippers and has been beloved as a shrine connected to nature worship. The ancient and imposing trees and the calm atmosphere of the grounds are attractive, making it a popular power spot for worshippers and tourists alike.
The grounds are lush with greenery and are perfect for strolling, and many people visit in search of goshuin stamps, matchmaking, health and longevity, etc. The temple is sometimes lit up at night, allowing you to enjoy different atmospheres both day and night.
Highlights
- Sacred Tree: Okusu: A giant tree said to be about 2,000 years old. It is said that if you walk around the trunk, your wishes will come true and your life will be extended, so many worshippers come to see it.
- Main hall and worship hall: A calm shrine building. A space where you can worship quietly and experience traditional shrine architecture.
- Amulets and votive plaques for matchmaking and good health: There are various charms and votive plaques on display, and visitors are particularly notable for praying for love and longevity.
- Walking path within the temple groundsThere are many photogenic spots, such as the approach to the shrine surrounded by trees and stone steps, so you can enjoy a leisurely stroll.
- Lighting up (seasonal and event times): Depending on the season, the area is lit up at night, creating a magical atmosphere.
- Goshuin (temple stamp): You can receive a temple seal at the shrine office (there may be a waiting time depending on the time and how busy it is).
Access (nearest station, transportation, etc.)
- Nearest station: Atami Station on the JR Tokaido Main Line and JR Ito Line.
- Walking: About 10 to 15 minutes on foot from Atami Station (there is a gentle slope and stone steps from the station to the temple grounds).
- busFrom Atami Station, take a Tokai Bus or other bus to "Kinomiya Jinja-mae" or a nearby bus stop, then walk for a short distance (we recommend checking the route and timetable in advance).
- car: Accessible from roads within Atami city. There is a parking lot for visitors near the temple grounds, but the number of spaces is limited and it tends to fill up during the tourist season. We recommend using public transportation.

- Atami Sun Beach: Enjoy a stroll along the seaside beach and the night view. Within walking distance of Atami Station.
- MOA Museum of Art: Exhibits Japanese and Oriental art. Located in a scenic spot, the garden is also a highlight.
- Atami Castle: A spot with an observation deck, historical exhibits, and great views of the city and sea.
- Atami Plum Garden: Plum blossoms bloom from winter to early spring, allowing you to enjoy a seasonal view.
- Kiunkaku and Hot Springs Town: A cultural facility where you can enjoy architecture from the Taisho to Showa periods, as well as numerous hot spring inns.
Things to be aware of (crowds, manners, seasonal precautions, etc.)
- congestion: It gets crowded on weekends, consecutive holidays, and during tourist seasons (cherry blossom, plum, summer, etc.). People tend to gather around the sacred tree, so we recommend visiting early in the morning or in the evening to avoid the crowds.
- Worship etiquetteShrines are religious facilities. Please observe proper etiquette when taking photos in the worship hall, remain quiet, and observe the general etiquette for offering money and worship (such as washing your hands, bowing twice, clapping twice, and bowing once).
- Treatment of sacred trees: Direct damage or marking of the Okusu tree is strictly prohibited. Although it is customary to walk around the tree, please obey any signs prohibiting entry.
- Footing and Weather: There are stone steps and slopes within the temple grounds. They can be slippery on rainy days, so wear comfortable shoes. Be careful of the sun in summer and the cold in winter.
- Parking and TransportationParking spaces are limited, so please allow plenty of time to arrive by car or use public transportation.
- night visit: Illuminations may be held for limited periods or for special events, so please check the details in advance. Also, be aware that visibility may be poor in some areas at night.
