Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)

Shinhotaka Ropeway is a two-stage (two consecutive lines) ropeway located in Okuhida Onsenkyo, Takayama City, Gifu Prefecture, which takes you up to an observation deck at an altitude of approximately 2,150m. Its greatest attraction is the close-up view of the majestic mountain range of the Northern Alps (Hida Mountains), and it is popular for its scenery that changes with the seasons. There is an observation deck, shop, and restaurant at the top of the mountain, making it a tourist base where you can easily enjoy the view of the alpine belt.

Highlights

  • A magnificent panorama of the Northern Alps: The view of the majestic peaks, including Mt. Yari and the Hotaka mountain range, is breathtaking. The view on a clear day is especially recommended.
  • Mountaintop Observatory: With an observation deck and indoor observation space, you can enjoy the view regardless of the weather. There are plenty of photo spots.
  • Four Seasons Scenery:
    • Spring to early summer: The contrast between the remaining snow and fresh greenery is beautiful.
    • Summer: Refreshing scenery of the plateau and mountains. A popular summer resort.
    • Autumn: During the autumn foliage season, the mountainside changes color and is a sight to behold.
    • Winter: A silver world of snow and frost-covered trees spreads out before you, and the view from the ropeway is exceptional.
  • Hiking from the top of the mountain/trailhead: There is a trailhead for advanced climbers heading towards Nishihotakadake, and it can also be used as a base for mountain climbing (seriously climbing requires proper equipment and experience).
  • Nearby hot springs: Another attractive feature is that you can combine it with the hot springs in the Okuhida hot spring area (Shinhotaka Onsen, Hirayu Onsen, etc.).

Access (nearest station, transportation, etc.)

  • Nearest train station: JR Takayama Station/JR Matsumoto Station (both accessible by bus, etc.).
  • Bus: Take the Nohi Bus from Takayama Station to Shinhotaka and get off at the "Shinhotaka Onsen" or "Shinhotaka Ropeway" stops. The number of buses varies depending on the season, so please check in advance.
  • By car: Access from the Chubu region (towards Nagoya) or Matsumoto via national and prefectural roads. There is a parking lot at the foot of the ropeway (paid or free depending on the season).
  • Air: You can also take public transportation from Matsumoto Airport, Toyama, Komatsu, etc.
  • Note: Routes and times may change depending on the season, day of the week, and snow conditions, so please check the official website or bus company for the latest information before heading out.

Estimated stay (estimated time required)

  • Round trip ropeway ride + summit view: Approximately 1.5 to 2 hours (approximately 2 hours if you want to take your time enjoying the view and taking photos).
  • If you include light strolling and visiting shops and restaurants: 2 to 3 hours.
  • If you are climbing or hiking in the Nishihotakadake area: Half a day to a full day (varies greatly depending on the course and your physical strength).

Nearby spots

  • Okuhida Onsen Village (Shinhotaka Onsen, Hirayu Onsen, Fukuji Onsen, etc.) — Enjoy the hot springs for a day trip or overnight stay.
  • Kamikochi (Azusa River, Myojin Pond, Kappa Bridge) - A popular spot for nature walks (shuttle buses are available during limited seasons).
  • Hida Takayama (Old Town, Takayama Jinya) — Experience the traditional culture and cuisine of the Hida region.
  • Mount Norikura and Norikura Plateau - A great place to combine hiking, cycling, and hot springs.

Things to be aware of (crowds, manners, seasonal precautions, etc.)

  • Weather changes: Weather conditions on the mountain can change suddenly, and the ropeway may be suspended due to fog or strong winds. Be sure to check the operating status and weather forecast before setting off.
  • Clothing and equipment: Due to the high altitude and low temperatures, bring a jacket and warm clothing even in summer. In winter, non-slip shoes and cold weather gear are essential.
  • Crowds: The trains tend to be crowded during the autumn foliage season, Golden Week, the summer tourist season, and consecutive holidays, and you may have to wait at the ticket counter or board the train. However, it is relatively smoother to use the trains early in the morning or on weekdays.
  • Risk of altitude sickness: You may feel fatigue or have a headache due to the difference in altitude. Don't push yourself too hard, stay hydrated, and take breaks.
  • Consideration for climbers: It is dangerous to attempt an advanced course without adequate equipment. Please plan your climb well in advance and take into account the weather and your physical condition.
  • Manners: When visiting observation decks and narrow passages, please be considerate of others when it is crowded, take your trash with you, and protect the natural environment.
  • Pets: Some facilities have restrictions on boarding, so please check in advance if you plan to bring your pets.

We recommend checking the Shinhotaka Ropeway's official website for operating information (opening hours, days off, fees, parking information, etc.) before your visit. Please enjoy the magnificent scenery of the Northern Alps while taking safety into consideration.
