overview

Arashiyama, known for its Togetsukyo Bridge and bamboo forest paths, is a tourist destination where Kyoto's nature and history coexist in harmony. The scenery changes with the seasons, and you can enjoy strolling around temples and riverside areas, as well as visiting restaurants.

Highlights

  • Bamboo Forest Path: A quiet walk and a great photo spot
  • Togetsukyo Bridge and Hozu River: The scenery along the river is spectacular
  • Tenryuji Temple and Gardens: World Heritage Gardens and Historical Architecture

access

It's about 15 minutes from Kyoto Station on the JR Sagano Line, and can also be accessed by the Hankyu Arashiyama Line and Keifuku Electric Railway (Arashiyama Line). It's easy to get around on foot from the station.

Estimated stay

You can tour the main spots in 2 to 4 hours, but if you include meals and a ride on the trolley train, we recommend a half-day to a full day.

Nearby spots

  • Tenryu-ji Temple (Ukyo Ward, Kyoto City)
  • Sagano Scenic Railway Trolley Train (Kameoka to Sagano)
  • Daikakuji Temple (Ukyo Ward, Kyoto City)

Points to note

It gets very crowded with tourists, so it is best to stroll around in the early morning or evening. Please be careful when walking on rainy days as the bamboo forest and stone steps can be slippery.
