Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)
Tomioka Silk Mill is a Meiji-era government-run modern silk mill located in Tomioka City, Gunma Prefecture, established in 1872 (Meiji 5). It was a pioneering facility that introduced modern mechanized silk-reeling technology to Japan, and retains a unique landscape that mixes Western-style architecture, primarily made of brick, with Japanese timber-frame construction. In 2014, the Tomioka Silk Mill and Related Industrial Heritage Sites was registered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and it is visited by many tourists from both Japan and abroad as an important historical site that symbolizes Japan's industrial modernization.
