Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)
Utsunomiya Futaarayama Shrine (Utsunomiya Futaarayama Shrine / Utsunomiya Futaarayama Jinja) is a historic shrine located in the center of Utsunomiya City, Tochigi Prefecture, and has long attracted local worshippers as the region's guardian deity. The origins of the shrine's founding are conveyed in the shrine's legends and ancient documents, and since ancient times and the Middle Ages, it has served as the guardian deity of the castle town and urban area, making it an important shrine deeply connected to the current place name "Utsunomiya" and the founding of the city.
The temple grounds are a lush green space where you can feel the tranquility in the city, and are equipped with a magnificent torii gate, worship hall, main hall, stone steps, lanterns, a shrine office, and a gift shop. Many worshippers visit the temple for milestone visits, New Year's visits, and various festivals (such as the annual festival), and you can see the traditional culture of the region and festival processions. Another attractive feature is its location, which makes it easy to explore the nearby tourist spots and shopping districts.
