Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)

Uwajima Castle (Uwajima City, Ehime Prefecture) is a representative castle in the Nanyo region of Ehime Prefecture, Shikoku, and boasts a precious wooden castle tower that is one of only 12 remaining castle towers. The castle structure from the Edo period remains well-preserved, and the layout of stone walls, turrets, and enclosures conveys the appearance of the defenses and castle town of the time. As the castle is built on high ground above the city, you can enjoy views of Uwajima city and the Uwa Sea from the castle tower, and the scenery is particularly beautiful during the cherry blossom season in spring and the autumn foliage season.

Highlights

  • Castle tower (main castle): The wooden interior and original fixtures are unique to the existing castle tower. The historical atmosphere and views are appealing.
  • Stone walls and earthworks: The distinctive curves and stacking methods allow you to appreciate the castle's solidity and beauty at the same time.
  • Turrets and gatesBy taking your time touring the remaining structures, you can understand how the castle worked and its defensive posture in the past.
  • View from the castle: A panoramic view of Uwajima city and Uwa Sea. On a clear day, you can see far into the distance.
  • Seasonal scenery: It is also known as a famous spot for cherry blossoms and autumn leaves, and there are many photo spots.
