Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)

Obasute is a scenic spot in Chikuma City, Nagano Prefecture, known for its magnificent views overlooking the terraced rice fields (Obasute Terraced Rice Fields) spread across the mountainside and the Chikuma River (Shinano River) basin. The place name originates from the ancient "Obasute Legend" (a story of elderly people abandoning their parents on the mountain), and it boasts a cultural landscape that has been celebrated in classical literature and haiku. The beauty of the sunset and night view is particularly highly regarded, and the scenery viewed from the train window on the platform of Obasute Station, as well as the view of the moon reflected in the terraced rice fields known as "Tagoto no Tsuki" (moon in the rice paddies), have long been considered scenic spots.

Highlights

  • Obasute Rice TerracesThe terraced rice fields, spreading out in layers, change their appearance with each passing season. You can enjoy the scenery of the moon reflected in the water-filled fields in spring, the lush greenery of summer, the golden hues of autumn, and the tranquil atmosphere of winter.
  • Views from the train window at Obasute StationFrom near Obasute Station on the JR Shinonoi Line, you can enjoy a panoramic view of the plains along the Chikuma River and the distant mountain range. The contrast between the city lights and the mountains is particularly beautiful in the evening and at night.
  • The moon reflected in the rice paddiesThe sight of multiple moons reflected on the surface of the terraced rice paddies around the time of the full moon has been celebrated in poetry and songs since ancient times (how it looks varies depending on the weather and the condition of the rice paddies).
  • Walking trails and observation decksThe area features well-maintained mountain trails, walking paths, and several viewpoints, allowing you to enjoy the scenery while strolling at a leisurely pace.
  • Seasonal highlightsEach season offers a different kind of charm: spring (cherry blossoms, water filling), early summer (fresh greenery), autumn (autumn leaves, harvest scenes), and winter (snowy landscapes, clear night sky).

Access (nearest station, transportation, etc.)

  • Nearest station: JR Shinonoi Line (JR East Japan) - Obasute Station. The observation spot is within walking distance from the station, and the view from around the station itself is a tourist attraction.
  • How to get there by train (example)From Nagano Station, take a local train on the Shinonoi Line for several tens of minutes (travel time may vary depending on the train schedule). Please check the timetable and connections before boarding.
  • By carAccessible via national and prefectural roads from Nagano City and Koshoku (Ueda area). Although there is parking available on site (small tourist parking lots and roadside spaces), the number of spaces is limited, so it gets crowded during peak seasons.
  • Buses and tour busesLocal buses may be infrequent. Using tour or sightseeing buses is another option.

Estimated stay (estimated time required)

  • Short duration (photography and viewing only): 30 minutes to 1 hour
  • Walking (visiting observation decks, walking around the rice terraces): 1-2 hours
  • Relaxed (enjoying the sunset/night view, strolling around the area): 2-3 hours or more (If waiting for the night view, take precautions against the cold as it will get dark).

Nearby spots

  • Scenery along the Chikuma River: Enjoy driving or strolling along the river.
  • Hot springs in Chikuma City: There are hot spring inns and day-trip hot springs within driving distance. They are convenient for relaxing and recovering from sightseeing fatigue.
  • Sightseeing in Nagano City (including Zenkoji Temple): There are several historical sites around Nagano Station (accessible by car or train).
  • Surrounding terraced rice fields and rural landscapes: Visiting these areas in conjunction with the scattered rural landscapes will make for a more fulfilling sightseeing experience.

Things to be aware of (crowds, manners, seasonal precautions, etc.)

  • congestionDuring sunset, full moon season, cherry blossom season, and autumn foliage season, the number of visitors increases, and the parking lot may become full. Please consider using public transportation or arriving early.
  • MannersRice terraces are farmland, and much of it is privately owned. Please do not enter the fields or crops, take your trash with you, and be considerate of the local residents.
  • safetyIt gets dark at night and it's difficult to see your footing. Please bring a headlamp or flashlight and wear non-slip shoes. There are many mountain trails and slopes, so please avoid taking unnecessary risks.
  • Weather and SeasonDuring winter, roads and sidewalks can be slippery due to snow and ice, so studded tires or chains may be necessary. In spring, the moon reflected in the rice paddies may not be visible due to watering conditions or weather.
  • Filming and dronesWhen filming, please pay attention to the safety of your surroundings and strictly adhere to local rules and regulations when flying your drone. Avoid flying in restricted areas or crowded places.

(Note) When visiting, we recommend checking the latest traffic information, weather forecast, and station and parking information in advance. Obasute is a place that changes its appearance with each season, so please choose the best time and season to visit according to your purpose.
