Okushiri Island (Okushiri Town, Okushiri District) is an island floating in the Sea of Japan off the west coast of Hokkaido's main island, and is an attractive remote island with a magnificent coastline, cliffs, coves, and abundant seafood. Historically, the island suffered great damage from the Hokkaido Southwest Offshore Earthquake that occurred on July 12, 1993, with the damage from the tsunami being particularly severe. Based on this experience, the island has been equipped with disaster prevention facilities and tsunami education, and facilities have been set up to convey the memories and lessons of the recovery. After recovering from the earthquake, the island is promoting its charm to visitors through its revived fishing industry and tourism.
