Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)

Okushiri Island (Okushiri Town, Okushiri District) is an island floating in the Sea of Japan off the west coast of Hokkaido's main island, and is an attractive remote island with a magnificent coastline, cliffs, coves, and abundant seafood. The island has a small population, and its laid-back fishing village scenery and natural landscape remain, making it an ideal place for a trip to enjoy nature walks, fishing, and seafood.

Historically, the island suffered great damage from the Hokkaido Southwest Offshore Earthquake that occurred on July 12, 1993, with the damage from the tsunami being particularly severe. Based on this experience, the island has been equipped with disaster prevention facilities and tsunami education, and facilities have been set up to convey the memories and lessons of the recovery. After recovering from the earthquake, the island is promoting its charm to visitors through its revived fishing industry and tourism.

Highlights

  • Tsunami and disaster prevention facilities: Facilities with exhibits and materials related to the 1993 earthquake (such as the Tsunami Museum), where you can learn the lessons of the disaster and the progress of reconstruction.
  • Coastal landscapes and cliffsThe views from the cliffs, inlets, and capes facing the Sea of Japan are dynamic. There are also many spots where you can enjoy beautiful sunsets, making it a great place for photography.
  • Seafood (sea urchin, scallops, etc.)The island is famous for its fresh seafood, and there are restaurants and direct sales outlets where you can enjoy seasonal seafood.
  • Walking and cycling: There is little traffic and there are roads along the coast where you can leisurely drive or walk, making it ideal for island tours.
  • Fishing and divingThere are many fishing spots scattered around the island, and you can also enjoy diving and snorkeling in areas with clear water (please be aware of the season and sea conditions).
  • Hot springs and accommodation: You can relax and enjoy the island's seafood at the inns and hot springs (or bathing facilities) on the island.

Access (nearest station, transportation, etc.)

There are two main ways to get to Okushiri Island: by air or by sea. Public transportation is limited, so we recommend checking the timetable in advance and planning with plenty of time.

  • Air: There are regular flights to Okushiri Airport (Okushiri Town). The most common route is to fly from Hakodate or Sapporo, and from the airport you can travel to various parts of the island by taxi or rental car. The number of flights varies depending on the season and day of the week, so please check the flight information of the airline and airport in advance.
  • Sea route (ferry)Ferries operate from ports on the Honshu and Hokkaido sides (e.g., nearby port towns). Some ferries can accommodate vehicle transport, so if you want to use a car on the island, it is convenient to board with your car. Please note that the ferry schedule changes depending on the season and weather, and there is a possibility of cancellations in bad weather.
  • Nearest major station/city: If you're heading to Okushiri Island, coastal cities such as Hakodate are convenient departure points. From Hakodate, travel overland to the ferry terminal or airport, then travel to the island by air or sea. The exact route varies depending on your departure point, so be sure to check the transport timetables and connections.

Estimated stay (estimated time required)

  • Day trips: Yes, but it can be hectic due to travel time and the number of boats and sailings. It's possible if you depart early in the morning and plan to enjoy sightseeing and a meal in a short space of time.
  • 1-2 nights: This is the perfect length of stay to leisurely enjoy the island's main attractions and seafood. You can also enjoy the sunset, the ocean atmosphere in the morning, and stargazing at night.
  • 2 nights or more: Recommended if you want to tour the entire island and enjoy fishing, diving, exploring the island's villages, and the nearby sea areas.

Nearby spots

  • Hakodate City (tourism and transportation hub) — Famous for its historical Edo and Meiji architecture and night views, this city is often used as a starting point for trips to Okushiri.
  • Coastal towns (e.g. Esashi, Matsumae, etc.) - There are many spots along the west coast of Hokkaido where you can experience the history and culture. It would be a good idea to combine a trip to these areas with a visit to Okushiri.
  • Surrounding islands and waters - Some waters are popular fishing and diving spots, and boat trips and fishing tours are sometimes available.

Things to be aware of (crowds, manners, seasonal precautions, etc.)

  • Transportation and flight restrictionsFerries and flights are infrequent and may be canceled due to bad weather. The seas are particularly rough in winter and during stormy weather, so please plan your trip well in advance and check the operation information frequently.
  • Advance reservations for accommodation and dining: Accommodation and dining options on the island are limited, so we recommend making reservations in advance, especially during peak season.
  • Memories of the earthquake and tsunami and disaster prevention awareness: The island has exhibits and evacuation facilities related to tsunamis. Follow the signs and instructions, and be sure to check the evacuation route in advance in case of an emergency.
  • Conservation of the natural environment and mannersThe ocean and nature are local assets. Please be considerate of local life by taking your trash home with you, following the rules for harvesting and fishing, and avoiding loud noises and other nuisances.
  • Seasonal precautionsSummer is the season for seaside leisure activities and sightseeing, but be sure to take precautions against sunburn and heatstroke. In winter, be aware of severe weather conditions, frozen roads, and disruptions to sea services.
  • Restrictions on medical care and shopping: There are only a limited number of medical institutions and commercial facilities on the island, so it is a good idea to prepare your regular medications and other necessary items in advance.
