- Train: The nearest station is Tendo Station on the Yamagata Shinkansen. It is easily accessible from Tokyo by Shinkansen, and the hot spring town is within walking distance or a few minutes by taxi from the station.
- Conventional lines: JR Ou Main Line (Yamagata Line) and other lines are also available, making it convenient to access from Yamagata City.
- By car: Accessible via the Tohoku Expressway or Yamagata Expressway. Many accommodations offer free parking, but it can get crowded during peak seasons.
- Air: You can also get there by limousine bus or rental car from Yamagata Airport.
- Approximate travel time: Approximately 2-2.5 hours by Shinkansen from Tokyo, approximately 20-30 minutes by conventional train or car from central Yamagata (varies depending on traffic conditions)

- Stay for at least two nights as a base for sightseeing: If you plan to combine sightseeing in Zao with sightseeing in the surrounding areas (Yamagata City, Mogami region, etc.), we recommend staying for at least two nights.

- Crowds: Accommodations and restaurants tend to be crowded during Golden Week, the summer tourist season, the New Year holidays, and major shogi-related events. We recommend making reservations early.
- Onsen etiquette: Please observe standard Japanese onsen etiquette, such as pouring hot water over yourself and washing your body before bathing, not putting towels in the bath, and refraining from shouting in the changing room. Tattoo policies vary by facility, so be sure to check beforehand.
- Clothing and walking comfort: Comfortable walking shoes are recommended for strolling around the hot spring town and parks. In winter, there will be snow and ice, so be sure to wear warm clothes and anti-slip shoes.
- Seasonal Note: During the cherry blossom viewing season in spring and the autumn foliage season, there are many outdoor attractions to see, but please be aware that there can be large temperature differences on some days, so please be careful about what you wear.
- Local customs: Please observe proper etiquette at your accommodation (such as observing meal times and remaining quiet inside the building). Please also be mindful of whether photography is permitted at tourist facilities.
