Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)

Zentsuji is a historic Shingon Buddhist temple located in Zentsuji City, Kagawa Prefecture, and is said to have been built on the birthplace of Kobo Daishi, or Kukai. Believed to have been founded in the early Heian period, the temple has been home to many buildings and cultural assets over its long history. With its spacious grounds, majestic temple buildings, five-story pagoda, and Goei-do Hall (Daishi Hall), the temple is a popular place for training and worship, as well as a cultural and tourist resource for the region. Other attractions include the Treasure Museum, which houses and displays materials related to Kobo Daishi, and the natural scenery that changes with the seasons.

Highlights

  • Goei-do Hall and Daishi-do Hall: Halls dedicated to Kukai (Kobo Daishi). This is the central place of worship, and is always bustling with pilgrims and worshippers.
  • Five-story pagoda: A landmark within the temple grounds and a popular photo spot.
  • Temple complex (main hall, bell tower, etc.): Enjoy the traditional architectural style and atmosphere. Each building has a different origin and purpose.
  • Treasure Museum (Storage): This may display Buddhist statues, documents, and relics that have been passed down at the temple. Important cultural properties and materials related to the local area may also be on display, so it is recommended to check the opening status in advance.
  • Approach, garden, and trees: The scenery within the temple grounds is beautiful in all four seasons, and is especially spectacular during the cherry blossom and autumn foliage seasons.
  • Nearby cultural facilities: There are historical buildings and traditional performing arts venues (e.g. Kanamaruza) in the vicinity, so you can enjoy sightseeing there as well.

Access (nearest station, transportation, etc.)

  • Train: About a 10-15 minute walk from JR Shikoku Zentsuji Station. The Kotoden (Kotohira Line, etc.) station is also within walking distance. There are signs and a path leading to the shrine from the station.
  • By car: Approximately 10 minutes from Zentsuji IC on the Takamatsu Expressway (depending on traffic conditions). Parking is available within the temple grounds (number of spaces, fees, and opening hours may vary, so please check in advance).

Things to be aware of (crowds, manners, seasonal precautions, etc.)

  • Crowds: The number of visitors increases during the New Year (first shrine visit of the year), Obon, Golden Week, autumn foliage season, etc. During these busy times, the temple grounds and parking lots will be crowded, so please allow yourself plenty of time.
  • Visitor etiquette: Temples are religious facilities. Please remain quiet and be mindful of incense and candles. There are areas within the temple where photography is prohibited, so please follow the signs and instructions of the staff.
  • Clothing and shoes: There are stone steps and gravel paths in some areas of the temple grounds. We recommend wearing comfortable shoes. There are also halls where you will need to take your shoes off before entering, so shoes that are easy to take off and put on are convenient.
  • Climate: Shikoku's climate varies with the seasons, with hot and humid summers and cold winters. Please be sure to stay hydrated and dress warmly.
  • Check facility information: Please check the official information in advance for the Treasure Museum's opening days, admission fees, whether there are any special openings, and event dates.

Before visiting, it's a good idea to check the latest information on visiting and transportation on Zentsuji's official website or Zentsuji City's tourist guide. Please be respectful and take your time to enjoy the history and atmosphere.
