Mount Rishiri (1,721m above sea level) is a conical dormant volcano towering over Rishiri Island in Hokkaido, located in Rishirifuji Town on the island. Its beautiful conical shape has earned it the nickname "Rishiri Fuji," and on clear days, the summit offers a spectacular panoramic view of the Sea of Japan, Rebun Island, and even the distant mainland of Hokkaido. Part of the Rishiri-Rebun-Sarobetsu National Park, the mountain is also known as a treasure trove of alpine plants, with a diverse range of flowers blooming in abundance along the ridges and mountain slopes during the short summer months.

Access (nearest station, transportation, etc.)
- Railways - Mainland starting point: The nearest major terminal is Wakkanai (Wakkanai Station). Access from Sapporo is via the JR Soya Main Line, but the journey takes a long time, so please check public transport connections in advance.
- Ferry: Ferries operate from Wakkanai Port to Rishiri Island (Oshidomari Port and Kutsugata Port). The journey time varies depending on the ferry and route, but it generally takes around 1.5 to 2 hours. The number of ferry services increases in the summer, but reservations are recommended when it gets busy.
- By air: There are regular flights from Sapporo to Rishiri Airport. To travel from the airport to the ports and accommodations, use buses or taxis.
- Getting around the island: Rental cars, bicycles, local buses, and taxis are available. In most cases, you can access the trailhead by local bus or taxi from each port or accommodation.
Estimated stay (estimated time required)
- Climbing Mount Rishiri (round trip): Depending on the trailhead, the course, and your personal pace, the standard course takes about 6-9 hours round trip (a full-day trip with an early morning departure).
- Day trip: If you want to take your time to see the sights on Rishiri Island (viewpoints, hot springs, gourmet food), a two-day, one-night trip is recommended.
- Combine your trip with Rebun Island: If you want to enjoy both Rishiri and Rebun islands, a trip of 2-3 days and 3 nights will give you plenty of time (this may vary depending on the ferry operation situation).

- Rebun Island: A scenic spot known as the floating island of flowers. Day trips or overnight stays are available by ferry from Rishiri.
- Viewpoints on the island: Views can be enjoyed from the observation decks along the island's circular road and the coastline (around Oshidomari and Kutsugata).
- Hot Springs and Accommodations: There are hot spring inns and guesthouses on the island where you can relax and unwind after your trip, and you can enjoy cuisine made with local ingredients.
- Rishiri kelp-related facilities and direct sales outlets: Rishiri kelp is a local specialty. You can taste local seafood at direct sales outlets and restaurants.
Things to be aware of (crowds, manners, seasonal precautions, etc.)
- Weather changes: The weather in Rishiri is prone to sudden changes, and visibility can be reduced by strong winds or gas. Be sure to check the weather forecast and information on the island (mountain huts and management information) before setting off.
- Preparation for the climb: There are large elevation changes and steep slopes in some areas, so you will need sufficient physical strength and equipment (waterproof clothes, rainwear, snacks, a map, a headlamp, etc.). Even in summer, it can get chilly in the mornings and evenings, so bring warm clothing.
- Climbing times and ferry times: Your itinerary will be restricted by ferry and flight times, so if you are planning a day trip to climb the mountain, make sure to take into account the round-trip ferry times and make a reasonable plan. During peak periods, make reservations for accommodation and flights early.
- Mountain etiquette and nature conservation: Alpine plants are extremely fragile. Trampling or taking away plants is strictly prohibited. Always take your trash with you and do not collect plants outside of designated areas.
- Safety measures: There are areas where it is difficult to get a cell phone signal. Carry a map and compass, travel with a group, descend the mountain early, and have a means of communication in case of an emergency (check your emergency contact details).
- Busy periods: The area is crowded with climbers and tourists during the flowering season from July to August, the summer vacation period, and long weekends. Advance reservations for accommodation and transportation are strongly recommended.
