Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)

Izunokuni Panorama Park is a tourist facility in Izunokuni City, Shizuoka Prefecture. Take the ropeway (Mount Katsuragi Ropeway) to the top of the mountain to get a panoramic view of the Izu Peninsula, Suruga Bay, Mount Fuji, and the Izu Islands. The mountain's altitude is just right, and on clear days you can enjoy a vast panoramic view, hence the name "Panorama Park." With beautiful seasonal flowers (such as azaleas in spring, hydrangeas in early summer, and autumn leaves), the park is a popular base for promoting local tourism.

Highlights

  • Panoramic view: From the observation deck on the summit, you can enjoy a magnificent panoramic view of Mt. Fuji, Suruga Bay, the Izu Peninsula, the Izu Seven Islands, and more. The view on a clear day is particularly appealing.
  • Seasonal flowers: A walking path where you can enjoy flowers and plants of all seasons, such as azaleas and rhododendrons in spring, hydrangeas in early summer, and autumn leaves.
  • Walking trails and observation deck: At the summit, there is a deck with a great view and an easy hiking trail, perfect for taking photos and picnics.
  • Cafes and shops: There are rest areas and shops offering light meals at the summit and base of the mountain, where you can also purchase local products and souvenirs (opening hours vary depending on the season).
  • Evening and night views: This is a spot where you can enjoy the scenery from dusk to sunset, and if the conditions are right, you can also enjoy the night view.

Access (nearest station, transportation, etc.)

  • Nearest station: Izunagaoka Station (Izuhakone Railway Sunzu Line) is the nearest major station.
  • Traveling from the station: Taking a taxi from the station is convenient. Local buses and tourist shuttles may also operate, so please check the official website or tourist information before using them.
  • Access by car: Accessible via National Route 136. There is a parking lot at the foot of the mountain (fees may apply).
  • Ropeway: Take the ropeway from the base station to the summit. The journey takes about a few minutes (approximate). Operational conditions and fares vary depending on the season and weather, so we recommend checking in advance.

Estimated stay (estimated time required)

  • Short-term sightseeing (just enjoying the view): Ropeway round trip + view takes about 1 hour
  • If you take your time strolling, taking photos, and enjoying snacks, it will take about 1.5 to 2.5 hours.
  • Nearby sightseeing (combined with hot springs and historical sites): Half-day to full-day course

Nearby spots

  • Izunagaoka Onsen: An area where you can enjoy hot springs for day trips or overnight stays. A convenient base for sightseeing.
  • Nirayama Reverberatory Furnace: A modern heritage site registered as a World Heritage Site and a major historical site in Izunokuni City.
  • Egawa Residence (Egawa Family Residence): A spot where you can learn about historical buildings and the history of the area.
  • Izunokuni City tourist facilities and local gourmet restaurants: There are many restaurants that serve dishes made with locally produced seafood and agricultural products.

Things to be aware of (crowds, manners, seasonal precautions, etc.)

  • Crowds: It tends to get crowded during the azalea season in spring, Golden Week, the autumn foliage season, and on holidays, so be careful of waiting for the ropeway and the parking lot being full. Early mornings and weekdays tend to be less crowded.
  • Weather: The mountaintop can be windy and there are days when visibility is poor, making it difficult to see, so please check the weather forecast and ropeway operation information in advance. The ropeway may be suspended in bad weather.
  • Clothing and equipment: The temperature at the summit can be lower than on the ground, so it's a good idea to bring a jacket and comfortable walking shoes.
  • Nature Conservation and Manners: Please observe nature conservation rules, such as not trespassing on flowers and plants, taking your trash home with you, and avoiding the use of fires except in designated areas.
  • Pets: Please check in advance as there may be rules regarding whether pets are allowed (there are generally restrictions such as the use of carriers and leashes).
  • Opening hours and fees: The ropeway's operating hours and fees, as well as the opening days of the facilities, change depending on the season and day of the week, so please check the official website or tourist information for the latest information before visiting.

(Note) Detailed operating times, fares, and availability of shuttle buses are subject to change. Please check the official Izunokuni Panorama Park website or the Izunokuni City Tourism Association for the latest information.
