Kyoto International Manga Museum (Nakagyo Ward, Kyoto City, Kyoto Prefecture)

Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)

The Kyoto International Manga Museum is a specialized museum whose objectives are to preserve and publicize modern manga culture and promote international exchange. It is housed in a historic building that was once an elementary school, and a major feature of the museum is that it has utilized classrooms, hallways, gymnasiums, and other spaces as exhibition and viewing spaces. The museum holds a large collection of manga works and related materials from Japan and abroad, and conveys the multifaceted appeal of manga culture through research, educational outreach, special exhibitions, and events.

Its attractions include a well-equipped "reading corner" where you can actually pick up and read the books, the unique atmosphere created by the unexpected combination of historical architecture and manga, and the multilingual information and exhibits on overseas manga aimed at international visitors.Special exhibitions, workshops, and talk events by artists are also held from time to time.

Highlights

  • Library browsing corner: You can freely read a wide range of manga from Japan and abroad (admission fee may be required to view).
  • Permanent Exhibitions and Special Exhibitions: Thematic exhibitions are held, including the history of manga, the evolution of expression, and special features on manga artists. The special exhibitions are updated regularly, making them worth revisiting.
  • The building itself is a highlight, with spaces that make use of the former school building: exhibits in classrooms and corridors, and an event space in the gymnasium.
  • International Exchange and Research Materials: The library has a rich collection of overseas manga, translated materials, and archives for researchers, as well as valuable academic collections.
  • Workshops and Events: There are often drawing workshops, talk shows, autograph sessions, and other events held, so check the schedule and participate to have even more fun.

Access (nearest station, transportation, etc.)
