Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)
Benesse House is a complex art facility representing Naoshima (Naoshima Town, Kagawa Prefecture) in the Seto Inland Sea. It is a unique place that combines architecture and contemporary art, designed by architect Tadao Ando. It was opened by Benesse Corporation in 1992 as part of the "Benesse Art Site Naoshima." It combines the functions of a hotel where you can stay overnight with the functions of a museum that displays permanent and special exhibitions, and offers an experience that combines the scenery of the sea and island, architecture, and art.
Based on the concept that "the architecture itself is art, a place where artwork and life coexist," contemporary art is displayed in guest rooms and public spaces, and sculptures and installations both inside and outside the building are in dialogue with the island's nature. By touring other art spots on Naoshima (such as the Chichu Art Museum, Lee Ufan Museum, and Art House Project), the hotel serves as a base for the Setouchi Triennale and everyday art appreciation.
Highlights
- The architectural space designed by Tadao Ando: the contrast between the straight lines of the concrete and the sea and sky, and the way the light is incorporated are stunning. The views from the outdoor terrace and corridor are spectacular.
- Museum Collection & Special Exhibitions: Exhibiting contemporary art from Japan and abroad. Permanent and special exhibitions are held alternately, so you'll discover something new every time you visit (please note that photography is not permitted in many exhibition rooms).
- Staying overnight: The guest rooms at Benesse House are designed to coexist with the artworks, allowing you to relax and enjoy the view of the Seto Inland Sea from your room or terrace. The atmosphere inside the building changes at night, allowing for a more relaxed viewing experience (advance reservations recommended).
- Outdoor sculpture and art site: A group of outdoor sculptures scattered across the hills and seaside. It's fun to explore the works while strolling around.
- Fusion of the sea and nature: Experience the interaction between nature and art through the sea breeze, the light that changes with the time of day, and the scent of the sea.
Access (nearest station, transportation, etc.)
- Main route (train + ferry): First, travel by Shinkansen or conventional train to Takamatsu (JR Takamatsu Station) or Okayama (JR Okayama Station).
- From Takamatsu: Take a ferry or high-speed boat from Takamatsu Port (near Takamatsu Chikko) to Naoshima (bound for Miyanoura Port or Honmura). The journey time is approximately 50 to 20 minutes depending on the boat (high-speed boats are shorter).
- Okayama (Uno) Route: Take the train from Okayama to Uno (Uno Port), then take the ferry from Uno Port to Naoshima (approximately 10-20 minutes). The most convenient route is to cross the Seto Ohashi Bridge.
- Travel within Naoshima: After disembarking at Miyanoura Port or Honmura (Honmura District), you can travel to Benesse House by island shuttle bus (Naoshima Town Bus/tour bus that goes around each tourist spot), taxi, rental bicycle, or on foot. As there are slopes and ups and downs from the port, it is easiest to take a bus or taxi. The estimated travel time from the port is about 10-20 minutes by bus, or 40 minutes to 1 hour by foot (depending on the route).
- Please note: The number of ferries varies depending on the season and day of the week. They tend to be particularly crowded on weekends, holidays, and in the summer, so be sure to check the timetable in advance and plan your accommodation and itinerary well in advance.
Estimated stay (estimated time required)
- Short tour: If you only want to see the exterior of Benesse House and the outdoor sculptures, it will take about 1 to 1.5 hours.
- Focus on viewing the exhibits: If you want to take your time looking at the exhibits in the museum, you will have plenty of time to plan for 2 to 3 hours.
- If you're touring the entire island: To visit Naoshima's major art spots (Benesse House, Chichu Art Museum, Art House Project, Lee Ufan Museum, etc.) on a day trip, you'll need a full day (8-10 hours) from early morning to evening. We recommend staying overnight to allow for ample time.
- Staying overnight: If you stay at Benesse House, you can enjoy viewing the exhibits during quiet times, including the morning and evening, and the atmosphere inside the building at night.
Nearby spots
- Chichu Art Museum: Naoshima's leading contemporary art museum. Famous for its works by Monet and James Turrell. Accessible by car or bus from Benesse House.
- Lee Ufan Museum: Known for its minimalist exhibits, the museum is captivating for its harmony between the architecture and exhibits.
- Art House Project (Honmura district): A group of small art projects renovated from old houses. Unique spaces by different artists are scattered throughout.
- Naoshima's outdoor sculptures and attractions: "Pumpkin" (a work by Yayoi Kusama) around Miyanoura Port, seaside walking paths, island cafes and workshops, etc.
Things to be aware of (crowds, manners, seasonal precautions, etc.)
- Ticket and exhibition rules: There are many exhibition rooms in the museum where photography is prohibited, and the use of flash and tripods may be prohibited to protect the artworks. Please be sure to check the instructions and notices posted by staff before entering.
- Crowds: Ferries and facilities are extremely crowded on weekends, holidays, during art festivals, and in the summer. Reservations are especially important for accommodations and popular exhibitions.
- Transportation and time management: Ferries are limited in number and the last ferry may be early. Please check the departure and return times in advance and plan your trip with plenty of time.
- Walking and physical strength: There are many slopes around Benesse House, and there are long and uphill walks when touring the outdoor exhibits. Please wear comfortable shoes and clothing.
- Cash/Payment: Credit cards may not be accepted in some stores or taxis on the island, so it is a good idea to have a certain amount of cash on hand.
- Climate and season: In summer, it can be hot and sunny, and in winter, the wind can be strong and the sea breeze can be cold. Outdoor viewing can be particularly uncomfortable on days with strong sea breezes or rainy weather, so please dress and plan accordingly.
- Community Manners: The island is also a place for local residents to live. Please take your trash with you, be considerate of others, and avoid causing trouble on the streets when walking. Please follow the rules of the community.
Finally, Benesse House is a facility where "the stay itself is an experience." If you allow yourself plenty of time and visit during the quiet hours of dusk or morning, you can fully appreciate the richness of the interweaving of architecture, art, and seascapes. Please check the official website or Naoshima Town guide in advance for the latest opening hours, exhibition information, and transportation schedules.
