Glasses Museum (Sabae City, Fukui Prefecture)

Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)

The Eyeglasses Museum is a facility that introduces the manufacturing culture and history of Sabae City, Fukui Prefecture, known as a production center for eyeglasses. Sabae is one of Japan's leading eyeglass frame production centers, and the museum features exhibits on industrial history, hands-on programs, and a shop, with the aim of passing on to future generations the advanced technology and artisan culture nurtured by the local industry. The exhibits include old eyeglasses, documents on manufacturing processes, introductions to the latest technology, and artisan tools, and are structured to show the "past, present, and future" of the eyeglasses industry.

Highlights

  • Permanent exhibit: The history of Sabae's eyeglass industry, the flow of raw materials and processing, and precious vintage frames. The process is explained in an easy-to-understand manner through photographs and videos.
  • Craftsman demonstration corner: You can often observe craftsmen demonstrating production techniques such as polishing and welding up close, allowing you to experience the precision of handwork (please check the demonstration schedule).
  • Experience workshop (craftsmanship experience): There are workshops where people of all ages can participate, such as assembling and polishing frames and making simple original glasses (advance reservations are recommended for most of the workshops).
  • Museum Shop: You can purchase eyeglass frames and accessories made in Sabae, limited edition items, related books, etc. You can actually try them on before buying, so it's the perfect place to look for souvenirs.
