Ao no Domon, located near Yabakei in Nakatsu City, Oita Prefecture, is a scenic spot where nature and history intertwine. The tunnel was hand-dug by the monk Zenkai in the late Edo period (first half of the 19th century) to clear a difficult passage, and its most notable feature is the traces of human work that remain amid the rugged rock face and beautiful valley.
