Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)

Ao no Domon, located near Yabakei in Nakatsu City, Oita Prefecture, is a scenic spot where nature and history intertwine. The tunnel was hand-dug by the monk Zenkai in the late Edo period (first half of the 19th century) to clear a difficult passage, and its most notable feature is the traces of human work that remain amid the rugged rock face and beautiful valley. The simple power of the cave itself harmonizes with the surrounding valley and seasonal scenery (fresh greenery, autumn leaves, snowscapes), making it an iconic spot in the region where you can experience local history and faith together with natural scenery.

Highlights

  • Inside the cave, traces of hand-dug construction remain: You can see up close the walls carved by hand and traces that look like sword marks, giving you a sense of the hardships and skill that went into the construction at the time.
  • The contrast between the valley and the rock face: The cave is surrounded by cliffs and streams, and its appearance changes with the seasons. There are plenty of photo spots.
  • Walking trails and observation points: There are walking trails and observation points near the cave entrance, and there are also places where you can get a bird's-eye view of the cave entrance from above.
  • You can combine your visit with nearby historical spots: You can enjoy a fulfilling tour by combining your visit with other nearby tourist spots such as the scenic spots of Yabakei and Rakanji Temple.

Access (nearest station, transportation, etc.)

  • Nearest major station: JR Nippo Main Line "Nakatsu Station" — Nakatsu Station is the nearest major terminal.
  • Public transportation: From Nakatsu Station, you can take a local bus (towards Yabakei) or a tourist bus or shuttle. Please check the timetable in advance as the number of buses is limited. Taking a taxi is convenient and allows for flexibility in your schedule.
  • Access by car: Take the expressway or national highway towards Nakatsu City. Parking is often available on-site, so it is most convenient to travel by car (please note that it can get crowded during certain seasons and events).

Things to be aware of (crowds, manners, seasonal precautions, etc.)

  • Crowds: Crowds are expected during the autumn foliage season, consecutive holidays, and peak tourist season. Parking lots may fill up, so be sure to leave with plenty of time or check public transportation schedules.
  • Footing and Safety: The walking paths inside and around the cave have poor footing in some areas and are wet and slippery in others. Please wear comfortable shoes and be especially careful if you are traveling with children or the elderly.
  • Weather: Heavy rain and rising water levels can make the valley dangerous, so please check the weather and river information for the day. In winter, ice and snow can make the area slippery.
  • Manners: Please take care of nature and historical sites by taking your trash with you and staying away from restricted areas. Please be considerate of local residents and do not cause any inconvenience.
  • Nighttime visits: Lighting and safety equipment may be limited. Please avoid visiting at night or proceed with caution.
