## Zao Juhyo (Yamagata City, Yamagata Prefecture)

### Overview (history, features, appeal)
Zao Juhyo is a natural phenomenon that can be seen in winter in the Zao mountain range (Yamagata City, Yamagata Prefecture), where supercooled water droplets contained in strong seasonal winds adhere to the trees and freeze, eventually causing the ice and snow to stretch in the direction of the wind, creating unique shapes. Also known as "snow monsters" in English, the landscape in which juhyo forms is rare worldwide, and attracts many tourists as a representative example of natural beauty in winter.

Historically, this phenomenon has been observed for many years due to a combination of local weather conditions and the abundance of coniferous trees (mainly fir and spruce). With the development of modern tourist infrastructure (Zao Ropeway, ski resorts, hot spring towns), the area has become more well-known as a tourist destination, making it a popular winter spot.

Attractive points:
– The contrast between the artistic shapes created by nature and the snowy scenery
- A fantastic view of the sunrise and sunset
– Enjoy skiing, snow activities, and hot springs in combination

### Highlights
– The frost-covered trees near the summit of Zao Ropeway: The most popular viewing spot. You can see them up close from the observation deck or walking trails.
– The expansive snow fields and distant mountain ranges from the summit (Mount Zao): On clear days, you can see all the way to the distant mountains, making it a popular photo spot.
- Morning frost: The angle of the light is beautiful in the morning, and the frost appears more three-dimensional against the blue sky and morning sun.
- Night illumination (when held): The area is sometimes illuminated for a limited time, creating a fantastical atmosphere.
– View from the ski resort: You can enjoy the view of the frost-covered trees while skiing or snowboarding.

Photography Tips:
- A wide-angle lens creates a sense of scale for the frost-covered trees
- Aim for the soft light of early morning or evening
- On windy days, use a tripod and remote shutter, being careful not to let small items (hats, gloves) fly away.

### Things to note (crowding, etiquette, seasonal precautions, etc.)
– Check weather and service information:
– The formation of frost-covered trees is dependent on wind and temperature conditions, so the best time to see them varies from day to day. Ropeways and buses may be suspended or delayed due to bad weather, so be sure to check the official website or operation information before setting off.
– Cold weather protection:
– The summit is windy and feels cold. Please prepare adequate cold weather gear, such as a down jacket, windproof and breathable outerwear, cold-weather gloves, a hat, sunglasses, and highly insulating socks. Cell phone and camera batteries tend to run out quickly in the cold, so carry spare batteries and keep warm.
- Safety equipment:
– Snow and ice can make the roads slippery, so it's a good idea to bring light crampons and snow boots. There are snow cornices and frozen areas at the observation points and on the walking trails, so please stay within the ropes and fences.
– Crowds and time periods:
– It gets crowded on weekends, during the New Year holidays, and during the Snow Festival. If you want to avoid the crowds, it's best to go on weekdays or early in the morning.
- Manners:
– The frost-covered trees are a natural product, so touching or breaking them is prohibited. Please view them from the designated viewing paths or observation spaces. Please be sure to take your trash with you and be considerate of others taking photos or viewing the scenery.
– Environmental protection:
– To protect the natural environment, please do not enter restricted areas or areas with vegetation.
– Health:
– It is easy to get sick in the cold environment at high altitudes, so don’t push yourself too hard, take frequent breaks, and drink plenty of fluids. If you have a chronic illness, consult with your doctor and make a reasonable plan.
