Kobe Luminarie is a festival of lights that symbolizes the repose of the souls of those affected by the 1995 Great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake and hope for recovery. Founded as a memorial to the victims of the disaster and a prayer for the city's revival, it is held every year from early to mid-December in the area around the former foreign settlement and Higashi-Yuenchi Park. Designed based on traditional Italian light decorations (Luminarie), the festival features arched tunnels of light and giant illuminated objects adorning the roads. The beauty of the warm light enveloping the cityscape at night and its purpose of cherishing the memory of the disaster attract many visitors.
Highlights
- Tunnel of Light (Arch): The biggest attraction is the experience of being enveloped in light while walking through the long arched passage. It is also a popular photo spot.
- The large object at Higashiyuenchi Park:The dome-shaped and monumental illuminations set up in the center of the venue are a sight to behold.
- Light-up of the former foreign settlement and Motomachi area: The contrast between the historical architecture and the light is beautiful and can be enjoyed while walking around the city.
- Design changes every year:While the basic structure is maintained, the design and color usage change slightly each time, so there are many repeat customers.
- An atmosphere of mourning and prayerAlthough it is a festival, it also has a strong meaning of mourning, and people can be seen quietly praying.
Access (nearest station, transportation, etc.)
- Nearest station: JR/Hanshin Motomachi Station, JR/Hankyu/Hanshin Sannomiya (Kobe-Sannomiya) Station. The venue is accessible on foot from either station.
- Walking: 10-15 minute walk from Motomachi Station towards Higashi-Yuenchi, or 15-20 minutes from Sannomiya Station (travel time may vary depending on traffic conditions).
- Use of public transportation is recommended:During the event, it will be inconvenient to come by car due to restrictions on surrounding roads and a lack of parking spaces. We recommend that you come by public transportation.
- Special traffic information: During the event, there may be entrance restrictions, road closures, and special schedules. Please check the latest official website and public transportation information.
- Nighttime return journey: It will be very crowded at the end of the event. We recommend that you leave a little later than usual, or go to a nearby restaurant or cafe.
Estimated stay (estimated time required)
- If you just want to walk through the illuminations and see the main sights: 30 minutes to 1 hour
- If you include photography and strolling around the area (Nankinmachi, the former foreign settlement, etc.): 1.5 to 3 hours
- Allowance for time when it is crowded (entrance lines and waiting times): It is safe to plan on adding 30 minutes to an hour.
Nearby spots
- Nankinmachi (Kobe Chinatown): Near the venue, you can enjoy meals at food stalls and Chinese restaurants.
- Former Foreign Settlement Area: Lined with retro Western-style buildings and shops, it's a great place to stroll around day or night.
- Harborland/Meriken Park: This is a seaside night view spot, and many tourists visit it together with the Luminarie.
- Kitano Foreigner's House District: This area is home to Western-style buildings and an exotic atmosphere. It's easy to combine with daytime sightseeing.
Things to be aware of (crowds, manners, seasonal precautions, etc.)
- Measures to prevent congestion: The busiest times are between 6:30 PM and 8:30 PM. Traffic restrictions and long queues can occur during peak hours. If possible, try to visit right after the venue opens or closes, or on a weekday.
- Manners: The Illuminarie is an event with a strong mourning meaning. Please refrain from shouting, running, leaving trash behind, etc. When taking photos, please be considerate of those around you.
- Safety/cold protection：As the event is held in December, temperatures will be low. Please be sure to take adequate measures to protect yourself from the cold (coat, gloves, hat, etc.). We recommend wearing comfortable shoes to prevent falls due to crowds.
- photo shoot: When it is crowded, the use of tripods and large equipment may be prohibited or restricted. Please follow the official instructions of the Luminarie.
- Wheelchairs and strollers: The main pathways are relatively flat, but may be difficult to navigate when crowded. If you are using a wheelchair or a stroller, please check the access information and directions in advance.
