Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)

Yutoku Inari Shrine is one of the most famous Inari shrines in Kashima City, Saga Prefecture. Founded in the Edo period, it has attracted worshippers as the guardian deity of the Saga domain and the local commerce, industry, and fishing industry. The shrine's major attractions are the beautiful scenery of its vermilion-lacquered shrine buildings stretching along the mountainside, and the views of the Ariake Sea and Kashima cityscape from the shrine grounds.

The shrine is lavishly and gorgeously decorated, and in addition to the deep faith of Inari Shrine, it is also popular for its architectural beauty and photogenic scenery. Many worshippers visit the shrine for New Year's visits, Setsubun, and various festivals.

Highlights

  • Torii gate approach: A series of torii gates of various sizes and stone steps give you a taste of the Inari faith.
  • Komakitsune statues: The fox statues placed in various places within the temple grounds are symbols of the Inari faith.

Things to be aware of (crowds, manners, seasonal precautions, etc.)

  • Crowds: The shrine gets very crowded during New Year's visits, long weekends, festival days, and during the autumn foliage and cherry blossom seasons. We recommend using public transportation and visiting early in the morning or in the evening.
  • Stairs and slopes: As the shrine buildings are connected to the mountainside, there are many stairs and slopes, so we recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes. Some areas may be slippery in rainy weather.
  • Worship Manners: Shrines are places of faith. Please be mindful of proper etiquette in the worship hall, how you handle the offering box and offerings, and obey any signs prohibiting entry to the facilities and ritual implements.
  • Photography: Photography is generally permitted within the temple grounds, but please be considerate when taking photos of festivals or individual worshippers. There may be restrictions on taking photos of the shrine office or exhibits.
  • Shrine office and shrine office: The shrine office (where you can get red seals and amulets) and the treasure museum have limited opening hours, so please check the opening hours in advance. Shrine offices generally have daytime opening hours.
  • Weather precautions: As the property is located by the sea, there are windy days. Be prepared for wind and cold, especially in winter and early spring. Be careful of direct sunlight in summer.
  • Use of drones, etc.: Flying drones over religious facilities and during crowded times is often prohibited, so you must check and obtain permission in advance.

Finally, Yutoku Inari Shrine is a place where historical scenery and faith live on. When you visit, please be considerate of the scenery and the local people, and take your time to enjoy the seasonal beauty and quiet, solemn atmosphere.
