Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)
Kakegawa Castle is a castle located in Kakegawa City, Shizuoka Prefecture, with roots in castles built between the Sengoku and Edo periods. During the Edo period, it flourished as a castle town, and the current castle tower was restored using wood based on historical documents, allowing visitors to feel the castle's original dignity. Stone walls, moats, a restored palace, and gardens are also maintained, and inside the castle, armor and documents are exhibited, and historical commentary is given. The changing scenery throughout the seasons (cherry blossoms, autumn leaves, etc.) and the view from the castle tower are also highlights.

Highlights
- Restored Wooden Castle Tower: The castle tower has been restored using traditional construction methods and is open to the public. You can learn about its history through its original structure and exhibits. The top floor offers a great view of the city and distant mountains.
- Stone walls and moats: The stone walls and moats, which are the remains of the original defensive structures, are great for strolling around. There are also many photo spots.
- Palace and Gardens: The restored palace and Japanese gardens have a dignified atmosphere and are sometimes used for tea ceremonies and traditional events.
- Document exhibition and exhibition room: There are exhibits of castle history documents, armor, and swords, allowing you to gain a deeper understanding of the history of the region.
- Seasonal scenery: The cherry blossoms in spring and the autumn leaves are especially popular. There are also events and illuminations.

Access (nearest station, transportation, etc.)
- Train: Get off at Kakegawa Station on the JR Tokaido Main Line. It's about a 10-15 minute walk from the station (the easiest way to find the route is to walk from the station towards the castle ruins).
- Bus/Taxi: It is a few minutes by city bus or taxi from Kakegawa Station. If you have a lot of luggage or have difficulty walking, it is convenient to take a taxi.
- By car: Approximately 15 minutes by car from the Kakegawa IC on the Tomei Expressway. There is a paid parking lot around the castle, but the number of spaces is limited, so we recommend using public transportation when it is crowded.
– Note: Opening hours, admission fees, and closing days may change, so please check the official website or tourist information in advance for the latest information.

Estimated stay (estimated time required)
– Castle tower and main exhibits only: 30-60 minutes
- A leisurely tour of the palace and gardens: 1 to 1.5 hours
– If you are visiting in conjunction with a stroll around the area or visiting nearby spots: Half a day to a full day

Nearby spots
– Kakegawa Kachouen: A popular spot where you can enjoy a variety of birds and flowers both indoors and outdoors (recommended for families).
– Castle town shopping district: There are souvenir shops and restaurants where you can enjoy local flavors, Japanese sweets, and specialty products.
– Parks and gardens around Ninomaru: There are green spaces suitable for seasonal strolls.

Things to be aware of (crowds, manners, seasonal precautions, etc.)
- Crowds: The number of visitors increases on weekends, public holidays, during cherry blossom season, autumn foliage season, Golden Week, etc. The castle tower in particular is small, so entry may be restricted.
- Stairs and steps: There are steep stairs and narrow passageways inside the castle tower, so please be careful where you step. Elderly people and those in wheelchairs may have difficulty viewing some parts of the castle (barrier-free access is limited).
- Manners: Please observe basic manners such as not entering restricted areas to preserve the historic site, taking your trash with you, and not touching the exhibits. There may be restrictions on the entry of pets.
Eating, drinking, and smoking: Eating and drinking must be done in designated areas, and smoking must be done in designated areas. Fires and barbecues are often prohibited on the premises.
- Seasonal precautions: Protect yourself from the heat in summer (hats and plenty of fluids), and from the cold in winter. In the event of rain or typhoons, the museum may be closed temporarily or restrictions may be placed on viewing for safety reasons.
- Drones, etc.: Flying drones around historical sites is generally prohibited or restricted. Please check in advance.
