Odaigahara (Kamikitayama Village, Yoshino District, Nara Prefecture)
Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)
Odaigahara is a plateau located in Kamikitayama Village, Yoshino District, in southern Nara Prefecture, and is an area rich in nature, including mountainous areas at an altitude of approximately 1,600m. The highest peak is Hinodegatake (approximately 1,695m above sea level), and it is characterized by vast beech forests, subalpine vegetation, and a diverse mountain landscape. It has long been considered sacred by locals, and has been a popular spot for nature observation and mountain climbing.
Odaigahara receives a lot of rain and is known for its tendency to produce fog and seas of clouds. Each season offers attractions such as fresh greenery, flowers, autumn leaves, and frost-covered trees. Located within a national park (Yoshino-Kumano National Park), walking trails have been developed to help preserve the ecosystem, making it easy to observe nature. Another attraction is that you can get information about the local nature and weather at the visitor center.
Highlights
- Mount Hinode: The highest point of Odaigahara. The view is excellent, and on clear days you can enjoy the view of the distant mountains and the Kii Mountains.

Access (nearest station, transportation, etc.)
- Car (most convenient)
Heading from the Osaka and Nara areas, take national and prefectural roads. It takes approximately 2 hours from Nara City, and 2.5 to 3 hours from the Hanshin area (depending on road conditions). There are free and paid parking lots near the Odaigahara Visitor Center. In winter, road restrictions may be in place due to frozen roads and snow accumulation, so please check in advance. - Public transportation (limited)
There is limited public transportation directly from the nearest train station to Odaigahara, and local buses run infrequently and only during certain seasons. Most trips require a combination of buses and taxis from nearby major stations (Kintetsu and JR stations), so we recommend checking the timetables of Nara Kotsu and other companies in advance, or using tours or rental cars. - Note
Roads in mountainous areas are narrow and have many curves, so you should avoid or be cautious when driving at night or in bad weather. In winter, you may need chains or studless tires.
Estimated stay (estimated time required)
- Short walks (such as a round trip from the visitor center to Hijigatake): Approximately 1.5 to 2 hours
- Tour of major spots (Visitor Center → Hijigatake → Oojadake round trip): Approximately 2-3 hours
- If you are going around the nature trail or taking your time to observe: half a day to a full day (3 to 5 hours)
- If you want to take photos, wait for the sea of clouds, or take your time to observe, we recommend a day trip plan (effectively a full day) starting early in the morning.
