Huis Ten Bosch (Sasebo City, Nagasaki Prefecture)
Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)
Huis Ten Bosch is a large theme park that recreates the streets of the Netherlands and opened in 1992. It is a tourist complex that combines architecture, gardens, accommodation, restaurants, shopping facilities, and attractions, with a European (especially Dutch) landscape that includes canals, windmills, and tulips. Although it faced financial difficulties in the 2000s, it has since recovered and has regained popularity in recent years with a large-scale illumination event called the "Kingdom of Light," seasonal flower festivals, and the latest entertainment (robot shows, 3D/4D theaters, VR attractions).
Highlights
- Kingdom of Light: One of Japan's leading illuminations, the park is lit up with millions of lights, mainly in winter. The night view is breathtaking.
- Flower events: Large-scale flower events throughout the seasons, including tulips in the spring, rose festivals, and hydrangeas in the summer.
- Canals and cityscapes: Enjoy a European atmosphere by strolling along the canals, renting a bicycle, or riding a gondola-style boat.
- Domtoren Observation Tower: An observation spot with a panoramic view of the park (opening hours vary depending on the season and weather).
- Attractions & Experiences: A wide variety of attractions including indoor and outdoor attractions, 3D/4D theaters, robot shows, and facilities for children.
- Accommodation: There are plenty of accommodations within the park or directly connected to it, such as Hotel Europe and Hotel Okura JR Huis Ten Bosch. We recommend staying overnight to enjoy the night illuminations.
- Dining & Shopping: Outside the park you can enjoy Dutch-style restaurants, cafes, souvenir shops, and local Sasebo cuisine.
