Tsuruga Castle (Aizuwakamatsu City, Fukushima Prefecture) — Overview (History, Features, and Attractions)
Tsuruga Castle (also known as Aizuwakamatsu Castle) is a castle located in the center of Aizuwakamatsu City, Fukushima Prefecture, and is characterized by its beautiful castle landscape, surrounded by moats and stone walls. Originally built during the Muromachi period, it was developed as the government office of the Aizu domain from the Sengoku to Edo periods. It was the site of fierce battles during the Boshin War (Aizu War) at the end of the Edo period, and is a historically important site. The current castle tower is made of concrete and was restored in 1965, but the interior is a museum with a wide range of exhibits showing materials from the Aizu domain and the history of the castle, and the changing scenery throughout the seasons (especially the cherry blossoms and snow scenes) is a major tourist attraction.
Highlights
- Exhibits inside the castle tower (honmaru): History of the Aizu domain, materials related to the Boshin War, armor and weapons, etc. From the top floor, you can enjoy a view of the city and surrounding mountains.
- Moat and stone walls: The moat and impressive stone walls surrounding the castle are photogenic, especially when the cherry blossoms in spring, the autumn leaves in autumn, and the snow-covered grounds in winter are picturesque.
- Tsuruga Castle Park: The park surrounding the castle is perfect for strolling, with seasonal flowers and benches to relax on.
- Cherry blossom viewing spot: In spring, the illuminated cherry blossoms and night cherry blossom viewing are extremely popular. The combination of the castle and cherry blossoms is a landscape that represents Aizu.
