Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)
The Sapporo Clock Tower (Chuo Ward, Sapporo) is a historic wooden building built during the Meiji period, originally used as a training hall (auditorium) for the former Sapporo Agricultural College. The white wooden exterior and the large mechanical clock attached to the symbolic turret are widely known as one of Sapporo's landmarks. The clock mechanism was imported at the time and is still running today, with the chimes ringing every hour on the hour.
Its historical value and symbolism as a symbol of the city make it a popular tourist photo spot, and the museum also houses exhibits introducing Sapporo Agricultural College, the history of the building, the mechanics of the clock, etc. The scenery combined with the seasonal scenery (white buildings in a snowy landscape, blue skies and greenery in summer, etc.) is particularly popular.

Things to be aware of (crowds, manners, seasonal precautions, etc.)
- Crowds: Tourists tend to gather in large numbers from morning to noon, which can lead to long lines for taking photos and crowds inside the museum. If you want to avoid the crowds, consider visiting early in the morning or in the evening.
- Manners inside the museum: Please do not touch the exhibits or clock mechanisms. The museum is relatively small, so please be considerate of other visitors.
- Photography: You are free to take photos of the exterior, but inside the building, whether or not you are allowed to take photos or use a flash may vary depending on the location. Please follow the instructions of the staff.
- Seasonal Note: In winter, the roads are subject to freezing and snow, so please be careful when walking. We recommend wearing warm clothes and non-slip shoes.
- Barrier-free access: Due to the structure of the building, there may be many stairs and limited elevator facilities. If you plan to visit using a wheelchair, please check in advance.
- Opening hours and admission fees: These may change depending on the season or special exhibitions. Please check the official website or information center in advance for the latest information (opening hours, closing days, admission fees, etc.).
These are the main points about the Sapporo Clock Tower. It's not just a great photo spot, but it's also a place where you can get a feel for the history of the Meiji period and the transition of the city, so we recommend visiting it along with the surrounding historical buildings.
