This ancient shrine enshrines the guardian deity of maritime traffic. The approach to the shrine and souvenir shops have continued since the Edo period, and the famous stone steps of 785 steps to the main shrine and 1,368 steps to the inner shrine are its attractions. The views of the Seto Inland Sea and the worship area are both appealing.

The entrance to the shrine is about a 20-minute walk from JR Kotohira Station. It is about an hour by train from Takamatsu Station. There is a paid parking lot in town for cars.

Points to note
There are many stone steps and they can be slippery, so wear comfortable shoes. Take precautions against the heat in summer and be careful of your footing on rainy days. Please observe good manners when worshipping within the temple grounds.
