Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)

Hakodate Christ Orthodox Church is a Russian Orthodox church located in the Motomachi district of Hakodate. Following in the footsteps of churches founded in the Meiji period when Russian Orthodoxy was introduced to Hakodate, which was an open port, the church's architecture and worship space exude an exotic atmosphere amidst the Western-style port town atmosphere. The exterior features an onion-shaped dome and cross, and the white exterior walls stand out against the Motomachi streetscape. Inside, you can enjoy a quiet and solemn atmosphere, featuring decorations unique to Orthodox churches such as icons and a majestic iconostasis.

Highlights

・Exterior silhouette: This church stands on a hill in the port town of Motomachi, and its distinctive dome and cross make it a popular photo spot. When you take a photo of it together with the surrounding slopes and Western-style buildings, it creates a truly Hakodate-like image.
- Icons and iconostasis inside: Around the altar, lined with gold leaf and colorful icons, you can see the rich religious art that is unique to Orthodox churches (there may be restrictions on taking photos inside).
・Worship services (if open to the public): Orthodox liturgies are solemn ceremonies centered around singing, and there are days when public attendance and viewing is permitted depending on the season. Please be mindful of your attire and behavior when attending a service.
- Surrounding scenery: If you visit while strolling around the Motomachi area, you can enjoy the contrast between the church and the Western-style buildings.

Access (nearest station, transportation, etc.)

・Nearest station: JR Hakodate Station is the nearest major station (it is a bit far to walk, so it is more convenient to use the tram or bus).
・Tram (City Tram): Take the Hakodate City Tram and get off at the Jujigai or Suehirocho stops, then walk towards Motomachi. The most common route from the stop to the church is uphill.
・Bus: You can take a bus bound for Motomachi from Hakodate Station or the city center. After getting off, you can access the area on foot.
・Taxi: Approximately 10 minutes by taxi from Hakodate Station (depending on traffic conditions).
・Walking: Motomachi is within walking distance from tourist spots such as the Mount Hakodate Ropeway station and the Red Brick Warehouse, but there are many slopes, so it is a good idea to wear comfortable walking shoes.
*Specific routes, times, and travel times may vary depending on the season and transportation schedule, so please check official information and transportation timetables before visiting.

Estimated stay (estimated time required)

・Taking photos of the exterior only: 15 to 30 minutes
・General tour including interior viewing: 30 to 60 minutes (more time if there are explanatory panels or staff members guiding you)
・If you are attending a service: The length of the service varies depending on the event (from 30 minutes to several hours). If you are planning to attend a service, please check the schedule for the day in advance.

Things to be aware of (crowds, manners, seasonal precautions, etc.)

・Opening hours: The interior and tour hours may be limited, so please check the official information (posters on the church's website, etc.) in advance. Tours may be restricted during worship services.
・Photography/photography prohibited areas: There may be areas where photography is prohibited or restricted inside the building. Please refrain from using flash photography or tripods and follow the posted notices.
・Dress and behavior: As this is a religious facility, please refrain from overly casual clothing and speaking loudly. Please observe basic etiquette such as removing your hat and remaining quiet when attending services.
・Crowding: The Motomachi area itself is crowded during peak tourist seasons, weekends, and holidays. Please be considerate of other visitors when taking photos or walking.
Seasonal precautions: In winter, the slopes become slippery due to freezing and snow accumulation. Please wear warm clothing and non-slip shoes. In summer, there is a risk of heatstroke when going up and down the slopes, so be sure to stay hydrated.
・Consider the surrounding environment: Motomachi is an area densely populated with residential areas and historical buildings. Please avoid littering and entering restricted areas.

For the latest information on public openings, worship schedules, and whether or not the church is open to the public, we recommend checking local notices, Hakodate City tourist information, and church guides (official information if possible) before visiting.
